ARGH! It's pounding and pounding and pounding! I've got this crazy headache and I'm not totally sure why ... I don't normally get them.

Last week, I ate tons of chocolate, the next day for a week my head had been hurting ... wasn't sure what it was but I binned it as lack of sleep and holiday stress. As the week went by it slowly went away, during this time I hadn't eaten any chocolate. I was good for like 2-3 days, then yesterday I ate some more chocolate and stupid headache came back!

I've always eaten chocolate and it was fine but now that bliss has turned into a terrible headache! WTF!!

Is it the type of chocolate or somehow my body developed this aversion to it?

you are allergic to chocolate, never eat it again

Food allergies to cocoa or other chocolate ingredients can cause a variety of different symptoms including:

Headache
Heartburn
Rectal itching
Hives
Skin rashes
Confusion
Breathing problems
Chocolate allergies may also trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma who are sensitive to one or more chocolate ingredients.

Chocolate quality is a factor in the number and amount of additives. Generally the higher the quality of chocolate (indicated by the percentage of cocoa liquor and cocoa butter) the lower the chance of other additives. Mass–produced lower quality chocolate has less cocoa butter and more milk, soy lecithin, gluten and flavorings. The ingredients in chocolate will be displayed on the product label.

Some people are sensitive to naturally occurring chemicals in chocolate like caffeine, theobromine and phenylethylamine. These chemicals may cause mood swings and headaches in some people. The reactions to these naturally occurring chemicals in chocolate are not allergies.

A physician may perform a number of tests to determine if a person is allergic to chocolate. These may include skin tests and blood tests.

Many reactions to chocolate are caused by an intolerance or allergy to one or more of the other ingredients or food additives in chocolate. These include soy lecithin, milk, corn syrup, gluten, nuts, flavorings and dyes. While they are not intentional additives, trace amounts of rat and mouse droppings, as well as cockroach and other insect parts, are occasionally found in some chocolates.

Chocolate is probably a migraine trigger for you, as it is for many people.

Is the headache one sided, like one part of your head is throbbing?

Thanks for the replies ... good and bad, at least it gave me a chuckle.

It's one-sided and it hurts so much that my jaw is hurting as well. The weird thing is that I've always been eating chocolate, it just suddenly happened, two different brands of chocolate too. :(

I used to be able to eat all I wanted. Now I have to be careful or here comes the migraine.
Sucks too. Two of the best foods are chocolate and red wine which also triggers migraines.

Isn't the same true of pretty much every processed, canned, wrapped and/or bagged food?

OP, do you see spots/lights or have a metallic taste in your mouth?

yeah, dunno. going to give it a couple weeks w/o chocolate and see if it comes back, if it doesn't then most likely not the jaw. if it does, then it's to the dentist (i think?) ... dunno which I would rather have right now :(

The problem is, your not consuming enough chocolate and your body goes into withdrawal.

Eat a pallet of chocolate and you should be fine

Dr Sea Moose

*Please note that sea moose is not a dr and he recommends you see a real dr as you might have aids from eating too much chocolate*

It is possible you have not eaten enough good, solid, nutritious food. There is a lot of sugar in chocolate, without the proper food to balance the sugar, your body can react with a headache. I am not certain why this is but it happens to me often when I eat more sugar than I do good food.

I consider this to be a diabetic check. There may be much sugar in your system. For this reason, I always eat a good meal first before I eat candy, sweets, or sugar.

My advice is to go eat a good meal and take a couple aspirin. Your headache should go away after it starts digesting a nutritious meal.

Dark chocolate tends to possess more sugar than milk chocolate.

Good thing you found out what was causing your headaches, now cut back on the chocolate for awhile. Wow that was hard.

Dark chocolate generally has less sugar, that's why it can be bitter. My daughter prefers dark chocolate, and it's worked out well with her diabetes. She can eat a little bit without requiring insulin since the sugar content's so low.
