My Comments: Kudos to Sony for delivering a solid product for $100 less than the competition, for introducing some cool new features like the laser-guided AF lamp, for finally bringing USB 2.0 connectivity, and most importantly, for producing a low-noise 5.0mpx CCD sensor.

Canonphiles like myself are pissed at Canon. Canon is resting on its success instead of innovating to stay on top. The fact that no changes were made to the G5 besides a black body and 5mpx CCD is pretty pitiful (as compared to the G3). The fact that the Canon G5 has so much noise at higher ISOs as compared to the competition is also pitiful.

If Canon wanted to destroy the competition once and for all, they'd announce a prosumer digicam with a 6mpx CMOS sensor (taken from the 10D), 10x optical zoom with image stabilization (like the old Pro90), and add improvements like USB2/Firewire connectivity.

ya, the g5 is a pretty weak successor to the g3. the v1 is really a disappointment. and i have one question? how does the nikon 5400 compare to the 5700? (i like the 5700 more than the 5000)

i chose the sony 717 over the nikon 5700 due to cost, and the fact that it replaced my sony 505v. personally, if i didnt have the 717, i would not pick either of the 3 mentioned. i'd rather go for the g3.

The V-1 seems to lack proper color saturation.

Read that DCrecourse review first. Trading in the G3 would be very unwise.

V1 has the best night shot quality.

I was hoping the Sony would have fared better. The faster auto focus is great, but whats up with the white balance and color saturation? Battery life is down, but it now has a hot shoe and memory stick pro support. Looks like a good with the bad trade off, I'll stick with the DSC-S85 for now..its been great.

THIS IS A GREAT THREAD! I was planning on getting a digital camera and was looking at the Canon G3, but then the G5 came out. By looking at the review, I guess the G5 isn't really any better than the G3 (except for higher pixel count and the G3's 4MP should be enought for me). Now my question is this, I'm looking at getting the G3 now and I'd like to know if there is something better out there that I might be overlooking. The Sony V1 looked cool but I guess it didn't get that good of a review. All I want is a camera to take on vacation that takes GREAT pictures. I have this cheap little 'ol point-and-shoot 35mm Canon camera that takes great pictures. That's all I want out of a digital camera.

Just a general thought about 5 mp, so far most of the reviews I've read seem to point to the 5 mp cameras not being quite as good as the 4mp cameras in one respect or another.
If this seems valid to anyone I wonder the problem is ?

Most of the 5mpx CCDs just seem to be too large given the lenses they are being used with, hence the noise seen from the Canon and Nikon cameras. Sony's sensor seems to be a lot better in that respect, but its color saturation/accuracy blows!

JackBurton: If you're interested more in a point-and-shoot camera that takes great pictures instead of something that prefers to be tweaked manually (the G-series cameras), then also look at the Canon S45, S230, and S400.

Thanks GT! Ya, I was looking at the S400 too. But the thing I like about the G3 is the rotating LCD. It would have helped me ALOT in an over-head shot I was trying to take with my 35mm camera. Other than that, I do like the S400.

So the s45 and s50 are basically the same besides the s50 5MP... what to do what to do.. s50 looks sooo sexy though
