dpad new user questions

Unforgiven

Golden Member
so i followed the dpad guide by overkiller and im trying out dpad in attempts to find a new project to move to after seti I is over with. so i think ive followed everything correctly and it seems to be running the background exe (according to task manager muon1.exe is running) and i have a few questions....

1) the only file size i see growing in the directory is auto.sav, is this normal? should i see other file sizes growing while processing is going on? ive been running for 30 minutes only and the file size is about 7 megs already.

2) im not ready to join [TA] yet until i decide whether this project is going to be right for me, but if i was to try to join, where can i do that at? i didnt see anything on the dpad homepage to join a team.

anyhow any help would be greatly appreciated. im also using a program called muonmonitor to try to check my progress but nothing is showing, is this normal?

thanks in advance

Unforgiven,

First... you are "forgiven" - heheh.... ( a little shot at humor there )

You're only going to see auto.sav growing until a full simulation is done. (auto.sav is just the "safe" storage of an in-progress simulation) Then you'll begin to see results.txt growing. This is the "repository" of finished simulations - and it will grow until you reach 100Kb in size (at which time it will automatically flush) - or until it reaches at least 10Kb in size - at which time you may choose to manually flush. "manualsend.exe"

im not ready to join [TA]
Uhhh. why?

All you need to do is change your user.txt from "Unforgiven" to "[TA] Unforgiven" (minus the quotes)

MuonMonitor will not show you anything until at least one full simulation has completed. (it takes awhile - depending upon the speed of your processor)

Hope that helps! 🙂

yeah my name is already [TA]Unforgiven, just not gonna join a team quite yet until i see that this project is something that i really want to do long term. just as i read your post the auto.sav file went away and results.txt appeared 🙂 great timing! anyhow when joining a team all i need to do is have the [TA] in front of my name and it automatically assigns me to a team?

Unforgiven... you are quite correct.

the phrase
just not gonna join a team quite yet
is not quite accurate. By having [TA] in front of your username - you've already joined the butt-kickingest team there will ever be. Stay tuned for more butt-kicking. 🙂

Welcome aboard! 😀

too slow 🙂

ps, you may not have a "user.txt" file when you first look. If so, edit it in Wordpad or Notepad and put in a username (like Unforgiven. If you wanted to be counted under TA, then it would say [TA]Unforgiven.

Just a single line entry. Save it. When it sends results, it will count under your name.

yeah the guide by overkiller was outstanding for setting up. when it was said that this is one of the easiest DC projects to set up, thats no lie! really simple!

Any wonder we've gone from like... 7 - to 125 in a month? 🙂

We also have our own STATS now! BIG KUDOS to GeoffS - and crew. It has been a TeAm effort - and is growing daily. Check my sig line for the project.

We WILL be #1. No if's, and's, or but's. That's the way it will be.

Do I have to restart the program to get the name change to work? I started and wasn't quite sure on what the name was supposed to be, and I found out in mid-stream so I changed the name in the file, but didn't restart the program. Thanks.

Any change... of any sort you make -- you must stop, and re-start the client. Reason being, the client only reads the user.txt and the config.txt files on startup. 🙂

yeah I give it 2 mounths or less and we'll be #1 if we keep getting members like we do. and if Seti ends soon we really will be getting alot more members

how on earth can i tell if my uploads are going correctly? where am i supposed to look? the main page for DPAD is so confusing that i cant find anything regarding individual stats 😕

Your upload was all perfect if u get a little checkbox at the end of your transfer that says like "Good bye and quit" or so 😀 If u didn't get that one, then something went wrong. Lots of ppl have probs with Firewalls and stuff, though they're set to let muon1.exe through. I always have to shut ZoneAlarm down in order to send.

If your send was good, u'll show up here

If not, let us know and we'll help you!! 😀

well i have it setup running the background.exe and have it to auto send results....doesnt it do the uploading seamlessly and if so is there a .txt file or log somewhere on the pc that i can check to see if it uploaded?

There should be a results.txt which works up to 100kb then disappears, then works up to 100kb then.... 😉

There should also be a sendlog.txt, which will say the time/date, and how many results were upload and to which server 🙂

so one computer that i manually uploaded went ok, the other with auto send set on uploaded to somewhere but it doesnt show on the stats page :disgust: im using zone alarm pro and i hear that some people have issues with that and this project. im not pleased that i didnt get at least a prompt or anything from a computer running all day and night with this project on it only to upload into friggin space and have no results credited. am i to assume that auto send does not work correctly? if so then this project is going to be way too much maintenance for me. the homepage for this project is horrible and has basically no help section offered. im not trying to rag, but im getting frustrated with this project and its only been one day 🙁

is there a "hs92hbs90x67as-[TA]Unforgiven.txt" file in the directory?

Yeah...there is some problems with Zone Alarm...i don't use it so don't know 🙁

Garry

ZoneAlarmPro and DPAD are a no go if used together. Not even the passive mode in config.txt will help. But Stephen is aware of that and has an update on that problem for the next version of DPAD. I always have to shut down ZAP in order to send.

sendlog.log is the correct file name. If your Explorer hides file extensions, you may not see the "log" part.

Here are some things I've noticed:

When doing a ManualSend, the first thing that happens is that the Batch file renames "results.txt" to a new very long file name that starts with the Date and Time, followed by a random number, then your user name. If the DPAD client finishes a work unit before the manual send of that long file is complete, then there is a conflict because a new "results.txt" file now exists. So, DPAD sends the new, tiny results file, but leaves the big, long name file still sitting in your DPAD folder. I don't normally stop my client before doing a ManualSend, so this has happened to me three times already. Because of the random number in the file name, it is not in danger of being erased or overwritten by anybody but you.

Not a big deal if you notice it right then, but if you don't notice, you'll wonder what happened to the results and why Stats didn't go up.

If you catch it right then, immediately rename the long file back to "results.txt" and re-start the ManualSend process. It should go just fine.

If you don't catch it for a few days, then do a ManualSend to get rid of the existing "results.txt" file, then rename the long file to "results.txt" and do a ManualSend. Repeat this step until all of the LongFileName results files are gone.

Check your stats in about 2 hours and all should be good.

If for some reason you actually send results that were sent before (duplicate), then DPAD will ignore them and you won't see a stats increase. It appears that some people were deliberately sending the same results.txt file from different team members users in an attempt to inflate their Mpts.

kinda sad.

well the stats finally showed up, but i still dont have any .log file created. here is my config.txt file, is there something im doing wrong?

Resolution: 1024x768
Priority for background running ([N]ormal, [L]ow, ackground): B
Threads: 1
Auto-send results ([Y]es, [N]o): N
Auto-save interval (seconds; 0 for no save): 240
Rechecks for best-so-far results (min. 5): 5
Use passive (PASV) mode for FTP transfers: N
Download sample results file after a number of days (0=don't): 0
Sample file URL: http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/samplefiles/solenoidsto15cm_100.txt
FTP command call: ftp -s:script.ftp
Update lattice files from web every N hours (0=don't): 0

also, should i not run this project til the issues with zone alarm are resolved? i mean we run zone alarm both at work and i run it at home and shutting it down at any point is not an option 😕

Try turning on PASV mode for FTP transfers 🙂

Also...is there any reason you're not downloading the lattice list and sample results files? 🙂

Garry

i dunno what they do so i figured that if there was an option to toggle them on or off then id just default to off. plus i read another thread on here with someone suggesting turning those off for someone who was having issues with the client shutting itself down on him. i figured that if its a suggestion to turn it off entirely then i might as well just start with it off until informed that it was important 🙂

Well...downloading the best results will give your client a "head start" towards the better muon transfers. However, of course, having the client start right from the beginning could possibly bring brand new ideas, which could be worse, or better, than the current best 😉

But definately try passive file transfers and see if it works 🙂

Garry

well the results uploaded but they didnt show up on the stats page for awhile. i dont think selecting PASV mode will solve my issues of no log file being created either. got any ideas on that front?
