Downward spiral vs. Downwards spiral

first is correct.
precedent? I used 'forwards' in a college paper once. The 's' was deemed incorrect. So with it being a directional word (adjective? horrible with this: makes learning Russian a bitch when you don't have English 100% correct), I'd deem the precedent has been set with Downward.
