All great advise. thankyou!

mITX is VERY compact. You will probably have one full size PCI slot that you can use for a graphics card said:
Surely wifi cards can just be built in to motherboards now?

Most mitx motherboards i am looking at only have one PCI express and nothing else. Am i missing something?

Take a look at Gigabytes GA-xxxN-WIFI's, lots of good choices there. With everything you need built-in.

What to recommend really depends on just -how- compact you want the system to be, for an absolute minimal footprint there's Intel NUC and Gigabyte BRIX systems.

They can, and don't call me Shirley 😛

Built-in wifi usually costs a bit more than a similar non-wifi model. But with PCI slot space at a premium in mitx, that might be a good trade-off.
