Downside to buying a refurb OCZ SSD from Newegg? 180-day mfg warranty

A refurb SSD isn't necessarily a problem, a refurb OCZ however is kind of asking for trouble. They didn't become the poster child for unreliable SSDs and ripping their customers off for nothing.

This would be like buying a refurbished Deathstar. It just isn't worth whatever you're going to save. I have zero faith in OCZ. They were a complete pain in the ass to deal with and it was only due to Newegg stepping in and taking back the drive that I was able to solve the situation.

Just curious. How do people feel about refurb SSDs?

I've been eyeballing a refurb Agility4 for my inlaws build... with the Indilix controller (not SandForce...) but I just can't pull the trigger. I'm having a hard time trusting my Samsung 840Pro refurb (that I got in return when my original drive went bad...) so I don't see how I could trust an OCZ refurb. :colbert:

Are the savings really that great?

@Charlie98 - what happened to your Samsung? I was going to buy one of those...

S

dstevod, Samsung drives (especially the 830 and 840 lines of drives) are known for being excellent drives in both performance and reliability. I'm not sure what happened to Charlie98's drive, but I wouldn't let it dissuade you from getting a samsung drive.

this would be no different than buying any other brand used ssd.

without a report from SSDLife or similar reporting software on the actual SSD in consideration. it is a hit and miss.

I wouldn't by a new OCZ drive, let alone a supposedly refurbished one.

I really don't know... I was working along and the system just froze and never recovered.

It wouldn't stop me from buying another Samsung but, following that logic, I have a 2-year old OCZ Agility3 with the dreaded SF2281 controller I have had ZERO problems with. You pays your money and you takes your chances!

Wouldn't a refurb ssd by any manufacturer and not just ocz be a chancy deal especially with tlc which are standard?

I've had pretty good luck with OCZ.
I have owned:
3x 120GB Vertex Plus R2 (Barefoot 2)
5x 30GB Agility (Barefoot)
2x 90GB Agility 2 (SandForce 1st-gen)

I also own some Intel SSDs, which I consider the gold standard of reliability.

The only SSD that has failed on me is a Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB.
Failed in under a month, in a Netbook. SandForce 2nd-gen has serious sleep / hibernate issues.

There's some idiot on these forums with nine OCZ SSDs in his system. What a dumb ass!

They are apparently still running fine, but how many more days can such a setup last? He's just asking for trouble.

OCZ stock prices have crashed the last couple of days. They may not survive much longer.

It would help to know just what is refurbished about the unit.
When my sammy 830 went belly up, I got back a refurbished unit.

Is it the NAND, if so, then how do we know how much life is left ?
Not much else can be refurbished from a SSD...

I would look at warranty, and if it is under 1 year, not worth the "savings", unless it is really, really cheap.

There are charts that show the failure rate and reliability of SSD's and OCZ has the worst reliability for almost all their drives. So with that said I think you should count yourself as lucky and not push it with the refurb.

Here are return rates. This isn't failure rates but you can google failure rates and search for charts.

Your experience is anecdotal at best. So is mine. However when you look at the big picture I think you can spend your money much more wisely.

why dont u just sign a confession while ur at it adam...

lol... but honestly i know u want them to die... so u can replace them all to 840 EVO's and have an excuse for doing so.
And because ur wishing that, they will probably never die... cuz thats how murphy's law always works.

Yeah, don't RAID-0 them.

im telling u, you have murphy's law working against you, you lost before it already began. lol

I have only gotten 1 OCZ SSD in my life... and it was DOA...
Then i have never picked up an OCZ SSD after that, because of all the horror stories i have read, and i didnt want to have doubts on another SSD so i picked up an intel and that restored my faith in them.

I did have one die in April. It was shortly after I went from 6 drives to 8 in RAID-0. It was one of the two new drives. I went back to the store and got it exchanged with a working one.

I don't have any reason to go with any other SSD at the moment. There really isn't anything that's much faster than what I have now. Plus 4TB is plenty for what I need.

that is exactly why u want them to die... so u can have an excuse, just so you can have EVO's.
Its not much faster, but its still FASTER.

Your greed is greater then mine... and my greed would state that exact reason too.

When Haswell-E is released I'll probably have to switch. The 8x PCI-E 3.0 LSI controller I'm using now is integrated into the ASRock X79 Extreme11. I'd either have to buy a separate controller or simply get four 1TB SSDs for RAID-0. The Haswell-E platform is supposed to come with 6 SATA-III ports. That will be enough for an OS SSD and four 1TB SSDs in RAID-0. Not sure what the max bandwidth of the Intel controller is though. Probably lower than the LSI controller I'm currently on. We'll see.

That should get fixed with latest firmware IIRC. I have 2 SSD with SF Agility 3 ssd's as the windows drive. I have no issues with sleep.

no wonder your speed is IMBA...

All this time i thought u were pushing out of your PCH, and i was going how the hell is he breaking the PCH barrier?
