Downside (except speed) of using 8X DVD media with 16X burner?

I could get FujiFilm DVD+ or - R media for a really great price. My DVD burner is 16 X. I would not burn at 16X anyway to try to ensure better quality.

Will I get better burn quality with 8X media burned at full 8X...

Or 16X media burned at 8X.

The same question applies for FujiFilm +RW media. For optimum quality, am I better off burning 4X media at rated speed, or 8X media at 4X?

Bonus Question: FujiFilm CD and DVD media are made by Taiyo Yuden...True or False?

Doesn't matter to the drive if your media is rated slower.

As far as your bonus question, I have no idea.

True, if they are the made in japan ones.

For best burn quality burn at or close to the rated speeds.

So, burning a 16X media at 16X will give better quality than burning it at 8X?

Fuji 8x DVD-R disks made in taiwan could be Prodisc's. I have verified this myself with a 25 pack I just bought online(that was advertised as 16x DVD-R) and ran Nero on them for the ID and it turned out to be ProdiscF01 8x DVD-R Media(the Product #(25302422) is a bit confusing too, as some sites list(according to Froogle) the same Product # as 16x DVD-R, while others have it as 8x DVD-R, which is really what it is on the label(8x DVD-R) of the package).

For the most part yes. Exceptions when you've got a problem with your system where it can't burn at 16x.

yep all yudens are made in japan. 8x will burn fine at 8x but you may even burn them well all the way up to 12-16x depending on your burner.

It depends on the drive and the media. 16x will burn best 8x most of the time. Its really a trade off between speed and quality. It will also depend on the drive. what drive do you have?

Thanks eplebnista. Very useful info. Prodisc are only ordinary from the comments you link to. I have to check the label in store because I prefer Tayio Yuden. I have Japan-made FujiFilm (Tayio Yuden) CD-R's and they are tops. That is why I want to stay with TY.
