I recently reformatted my computer, and just got my Verizon DSL working again, which was running on 30kb/s speed for a week now. Now, the internet works perfectly, but whenever I try to download anything, it just hangs there after the first minute or so. The computer is perfectly functional, it's just the downloads that keep on hanging. Please help!

Btw, comp specs:
A64 3200+
MSI K8N Neo Plat.
1 GB Corsair Value Select
BFG 6800OC
Antec Sonata (380 Watt TruPower PSU)

Any weird internet settings that may have caused this? What browser are you using? Did you try a download manager? Mozzilla Firefox works well. Any more info on problem would help.

I tried using IE and FF, both do the same. I tried every computer connected to the router, same thing. I think it's a problem with the ping, because that's what the people on the WoW forums said (I was trying to find a solution to my constant disconnects). If I try to ping www.google.com, it works. But, if i try to ping somewhere like www.anandtech.com, it times out 4/4 times. Any suggestions will help, thanks.

Don't try and ping anandtech -

just try another website - try www.bbc.co.uk - that is always a good ping to try out wherever in the world you are.

Could you check connecting without your router just for troubleshooting purposes?

I think I should just call Verizon and ask them for a goddamn modem replacement. This is ridiculous... :|

what were you downloading???

were you using something like shareaza or a bittorrent client......???

to many connections has the tendency to make routers drop the internet connection and restart.......used to have the same problem all the time with my old belkin router....

Try limiting the number of incoming or swarming connections and then see if you have more luck......

you could also try connecting your PC directly to the DSL modem without a router in the middle and see if your connection still drops??

I would seriously look at the router before moaning to your ISP!!

Another idea.......I have a DLink DI-624 router and when the wireless Lan was turned on with no wireless clients connected (Use it for laptop and wireless media server downstairs) the net connection would drop periodically......I solved this by turning off the wireless transmitter when not in use before realising that there was a firmware upgrade available...

Try this small program Paessler Router Traffic Grapher. It can monitor the traffic going through your router and you will be able to assess what makes your router drop connections...

It will drop anything I try to download. Also, if I am on an IM client like AIM, it disconnects me for a few moments everey couple of minutes. I tried directly connecting, same thing. Our router is wired. It has to be the modem. Btw, I can't DL that because the internet keep on dropping for a couple of seconds. I did a clean format, so all the spyware and viruses that could have been there are long gone now. It happens with all the other computers in the house, too, so it's not my computer's problem.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!

This sounds like a "Wireless Zero" problem that I saw in another forum. Wireless Zero is a "Service" that XP uses by default that automatically searches for new wireless connections every couple of minutes, but it can screw up routers while it's polling for new connections.

Look at this website. IGNORE what it says at the top about Windows 2000 drivers, etc. Just look at the pics and follow along on how to disable Wireless Zero on your machine.

Reboot afterward.

Try your internet activity after rebooting, and see if the problem has disappeared.

Follow the pics here (again, ignore the stuff at the top of the page about Windows 2000, as it does not apply. You're only interested in the pictures):

http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/2000.html

You want to first STOP the service, and then set it to DISABLED. Click Apply. Reboot.

One other thing to check and do is this:

uncheck "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" under the "Authentication" tab of the Local Area Connection Properties in the Network Connections properties for your LAN connection.
