Downloads freeze under windows xp

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm kinda new here. Anyways, my problem is anything that I seem to download over about 5 mb or so, freezes at a random point during the transfer. I can still browse web pages and such, but the download just sits there doing nothing. I am behind a router, but I've tried going straight through my modem and it still happens. Is there something with xp that is making this occur? I previously used windows 98 and didn't have the problem until I switched my os. Any help would be appreciated.

if you do a upgrade from 98 to xp, it usually is gonna be flackly
