i believe that windows 7 allows (2) downloads at a time, i think windows 8 is (6). anyone have experience with multiple downloads? are they safe, or something to avoid at all costs? i'm in the process of downloading games to my new storage drive and because they're so big (and my internet connection not great, 1mb/s at best) it will take forever. so anyone know if there is a greater possibility of file corruption when downloading two (or more) files simultaneously? i understand that the possibility of file corruption is always present, and it stands to reason that downloading more than one at a time increases the risk, but i'm talking beyond what one would normally expect. any thoughts?

Um, what are you using to download your files? Are we talking about downloads using a torrent client? Downloads from an internet browser?
 
first off sorry, i meant ie 7 or 8, not windows.

i'm downloading games from steam and origin
 
It's a better idea to download one game at a time, just because you will get that game faster and can start to play it. Then download the rest in the background.

I don't think data corruption should be an issue.
 
Steam and Origin download through their own clients (not the web browser). It is safe, but I usually also only download one at a time. One thing you may face, if you're on a traditional hard-drive and not a solid-state drive, is data fragmentation - where files aren't close together or continuous on the drive, which causes the drive to need to seek more to read the data when it goes to access it. This is not a concern with solid-state drives. Corruption is always possible, but I believe both Steam and Origin (and TCP itself) has mechanisms in place to help prevent that.

At least with Steam, I don't think you can download a game in the background when another game is playing... unfortunately 🙁 It seems to pause it for me when I try that. I don't know why they prevent that, because technically it's fine to do.

Only download 1 game at a time even in Windows 8, sometimes bits get mixed in with bytes and they get megabitten.
 
the apps and protocols are smart enough to avoid corruption. you may want to limit your downloads to one at a time just so you can complete some games first.
 
the problem was for years the hd capacity on my pc was roughly 140g (two 74g raptors in raid 0). i've also been a steam client for a long time, but due to the size of my hd i would never install any more than two games at a time. ok so finally i built a new machine, picked up two 600g raptors (installed as raid 0) for storage, now i have room. since i was ready to download i just started thinking (never a good idea for me) and wondered about stuff in my initial post up there.

i always alt tab after launching the game and hit resume, it starts it back up and doesn't pause unless i close and launch another game

How many simultaneous downloads am I allowed if I'm on Windows XP, 0.5?

I was a Steam Client once, but only because my roommate pranked me by putting LCD in my water.
