I'm on my every year Linux kick where I install some Linux Distro and after a few days remove it because I fuck something up and can't get XP to play nice (boot) with it installed.

this year I figured since LiveCD's are so easy I would download 4 or 5 distros and try them out. I don't really keep up too much on the community so ideas for addition distros for me to check out would be lovely. As it stands right now

Ubuntu 7.10 - installed it last year and boffed my XP bad, ended up removing it after about a day. Trying 7.10 this year

Sabayon - never heard of it before today but people seem to like it, and it had Beryl integrated in the LiveCD which intrigues me, I was too lame to be able to get Beryl running on Ubuntu last year :)

Gentoo - Sabayon is based on this?

those are the 3 I'm downloading and trying out, This year I'm planning to get the install to go right and actually keep it installed and try to learn something hehe. Maybe 1 or 2 more suggestions would be nice though, can never have too many options. IF there's another Distro with Beryl integrated that would be lovely, I googled but only found Sabayon + some weird Spanish looking one - and I no habla that

you should check out Distrowatch. If you just want a working desktop to use, try eLive (based on e17, an update to e16 which can be found, last i used it, on the sabayon livecd. both are neat) Ubuntu, Kubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva, and Mepis are worth looking over, i *think* they all have LiveCDs available but I could be wrong. Linux Mint is a Ubuntu derivative that has a few things added in to the base system.

You can look into Fedora Core but Im not sure if it has a livecd or not. Check openSUSE as well

Ubuntu now comes with Compiz enabled (beryl and compiz merged) and is trivial to put to work once the system is installed. Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome and those are the two most used desktop environments on linux probably. Xubuntu is another option, which is a lightweight desktop environment based on Ubuntu and a good choice for older hardware.

Compiz sounds good, I like Beryl the little bit I've messed with it, I just burned Ubuntu on a CD-RW I think I remember RW disc's not being bootable but I'm about to try it thanks for the distrowatch tip I'll be sure to check it out. I want to get myself proficient in it so I can ween myself off Microsoft OS's hopefully for good.

Mandriva2008 is a sweet distribution. I got Compiz enabled easily and I am a new user with limited Nix experience. Grub gives me the option of booting in either XP or Mandriva and was easy to set up and install. I used NDIS wrapper to get my Netgear wireless USB adapter working with out the need for a single command line entry. This is a distro worth checking out via the live CD option. Good luck.
