I've got a cable modem with a 3000 down connection, but windows will only let me download 2 files at one time. Is there a way around this? When I'm in Kazaa I can download as many as I want, but windows sticks me at 2. What can I do?

Are you downloading from the same site? Some sites limit the concurrent downloads you can do. I don't have any problem downloading more than two files in XP.

This is actually a behavoir of the server AFAIK. IEs default limit of concurrent connections to a server is more like 4 or 8. Definatly not 2.

I will try the registry hack, but I'm curious about these download managers. I've always been scared to death by them. I've heard horror stories about spyware and tracking software, Data corruption, etc. Do these things really work? I've always been hesitant about managers. How many of you guys actually use them?

I have used download accelerator and it did work great. It had banners though.

i've been using getright for years (www.getright.com) and i even paid for it a couple years ago.i've never had any problems with it and it only continues to get better with time. the free version has banner ads i believe, although it's defo wrth the $25 or so to regster it

as far as i'm aware, it is one of the first and best download managers (note that download accelerator != download manager)

recenter versions have even included support for things like site sync'ing (like what black widow does)

give it a shot, i ensure you it's spyware free

I downloaded 3dmark2003 from OCClub with my standard connection and It averaged 275KB/sec. I downdloaded getright and used the accelerated segments and it averaged 392KB/sec download. Thats 70% faster. Not too shabby. Went from like 11 minutes down to almost 7. Thanks for the suggestions.

After downloading Getright and having good results I thought I'd try some additional clients. Doing some research on the net I heard rave reviews for a program called Internet Download Manager . I downloaded it and was really impressed. I doesn't have as many bells and whistles as Get right, but the performance was even better. After doing some testing I would average nearly 40% faster with Internet Download Manager over Get Right. I downloaded Unreal Tourny 2003 with both clients and The IDM client averaged a blistering 455KB/sec down while getright could muster 388 KB/sec.

I don't want this to sound like a commercial, because it's not. I just tried my first donwload manager today. I'm just really impressed with how fast this is. I've had a cable modem for 3 years now and I'm just finding this out :)

Just for the record I also downloaded Star Downloader that was mentioned about and I was pretty impressed with it also. Not quite as good as IDM, but pretty close. Overall 3 thumbs up.
