This may be way off base but : I have a 6600gt video card with an S-video port. Can I take analog video and transfer it to my computer using the video card. I would only need an RCA to s-video converter/adapter to hook it up. Will this work or do I need an actual video capture card? Thanks.

If it has VIVO, yes (it may just have S-Video out).

If not, you will need a video capture card. These cost about $20-30 at the low end.

They're fine unless you're doing something professional or you want a hardware capture card for low CPU usage. If you are trying to transfer VHS tapes, it will be MORE than enough, as VHS tapes look like crap to begin with.

And actually, you can sometimes get even better quality out of the cheap software boards than a hardware capture card, by capturing an uncompressed video stream and then using high-quality encoding software on it later. But again, not something you're going to care about unless you are trying to do something at near-professional quality.

Even if you had a vivo GeForce card, it wouldn't work well recording. nVidia added Macrovision into their drivers which ruins the recording of pretty much everything a GeForce vivo card.

Time to get a pci video input card.

All I want to do is transfer video to DVD so I will go with a cheap one. Is there anyting specific to look for or are the all basically the same?
