Hi.
Im doing a complete re-install of a friends PC next week. But she has a 56k connection.
So i need a quick way of updating her PC.
I have SP1a that i can burn to a disk, im just wondering if theres a way to DL all of windows update, or all of the critical updates in one go by me, so i can burn them to a CD.
Possible?
If not, what specific updates should i DL seperately (like the blaster worm fix).

And when is SP2 out, cos that`ll cover it all.

Thanks in advance.

Autopatcher is what you need. It was just recently updated to include all of the April patches to boot, but it does require that have already installed SP1a.

Try THIS! It will walk you through on how to create a Slipstream install CD that should include the current updates at the time of creating it.
As for SP2, don't know when it will be ava.

Did you want the updates slipstreamed into the original install? If that's what you wanted, earthling's idea would work fairly well. Else, the Autopatcher link would install all of the updates after SP1a following an OS reinstall, which is what your original question asked....

I don't see why Autopatcher wouldn't work for you. It's all the patches, just put together into a nice package.

Is THIS what you're looking for? It should allow you to download updates for what ever OS she's running for later installation. I was trying to save you the hassel of that by creating a Slipstream OS CD and let it do it for you.

Earthling30 has the right idea, this is how you can do it.
Enabling the Windows Update Catalog as follows:
At the Windows Update page, click Personalize Windows Update at the left,
and then Enable the Windows Update Catalog. Save your settings.
This adds the Windows Update Catalog link in the left box.
Click this link, then click Find updates for Microsoft Windows systems.
Pick the version of windows you want updates for in the drop-down list, click Search, take Recommended Updates. Then burn to cd.

With autopatcher, there are a few different downloads, you can choose the "lite" version that just includes the necessary patches, the full version includes some extra goodies that you can pick and choose from. It's not just a blanket program that installs whatever it wants, you do have complete control over what it does or does not install onto your computer.

Just my final two cents. Hope you get what you want done.

So will autopatcher allow me to DL the *.exes for each critical update and burn them to a CD for usage on another PC?

-----------------
It turns out that my friends doesnt have a WinXP CD, so i`ll have to do it the hardware.

Heres what i plan to do:
0) Create windows restore point.
1) Install SP1a
2) Install all critical updates
3) Install the latest VIA drivers (she appears to have a VIA motherboard, but with the windows drivers running, going of multiple VIA enteries in her device manager, mainly the IDE & USB controllers)
4) Install ZoneAlarm
5) Install AVG Anti-Virus
6) Install & run RegCleaner
7) Install & run Ad-Aware
8) Optimise SwapFile settings.
9) Install, run, and select relevent TuneXP settings.
10) Do a complete virus scan.

That should fix alot of problems shouldnt it? Such as stability, random shut downs, & help to prevent virus infections?
Any other ideas?

Oh, and whats the difference between the 4 Autopatcher versions? Full, update, lite & ultralite.
Im currently DLing the 226Mb Full version via my torrent program.
With that sort of file sizes, does it mean that it has ALL of the updates contained within it?

Here.

Because of some suggestions, we decided to make AutoPatcher XP Lite and UltraLite. This is not an Upgrade or Update. It's just a Lite version of AutoPatcher. The complete list is below, but here's the differences between them:
AutoPatcher XP Full - Contains Everything

AutoPatcher XP Lite - Contains Most Everything (Missing Tweaks, Bonus Tools, PowerToys, etc)

AutoPatcher XP UltraLite - Contains Bare Minimum (Missing Tweaks, Bonus Tools, and Optional Components)

And when they say "everything" ....

Autopatcher IS the download. You're downloading the torrent now (or should have finished a long time ago). What you need to do is open the program, it will expand the archive (which is what you're downloading, a compressed archive).

Then burn that un-archived folder to a disc (idealy -rw so you can update it every month) and install it after you install XP and SP1a, then your drivers, firewall, AV, anti-spyware, etc.

And finally, use Ghost to image that damn drive so you won't have to worry as much again.

Theoretically, yes this should fix the problems she is experiencing, assuming those problems are software related.

Good luck.

How big will it expand to?
Im pre making an image file for a CDR that has some utilites on, SP1a & autopatcher.

I dont have ghost, and neither does she, so im "stuck" with windows restore. Which isnt a bad thing.

I just finished downloading the April AutopatcherXP, with an archive size of ~261 megs and an expanded size of ~310 megs. That would give you more than half a cd-rw to play with.

Follow the link for the Unattended install to slipstream SP1a into your XP install disk to save some time too, if yours doesn't already have it installed.

Using Windows restore isn't a bad thing at all, it's saved a number of people's hides. The only reason I suggest Ghost is in case of the unlikely event that the entire system gets hosed, all you really have to do is spend ~45-60 min restoring your image and you've got an entire system including programs installed off of a clean system.

That isnt too bad. SP1a is 125Mg, other programs add up to around 60mb.

Ive already done that for myself ages ago.

Unfortunatelly, my friends PC doesnt have a proper copy of windowsXp with it. Either on a hidden partition or as a disk. Which im not suprised to be honest. She brought it before she knew me from a place called "Freelance Technologys", which are total crap. I havnt brought anything off them, even in an emergency for years. Ever since i went in for a 128mb PC133 module, and the clerk picked up a bare DIMM with his hands, covered in mayonaise, and tryed selling me it. They know fcuk all about anything. They convinced one of my other mates to pay an extra £50 for a voodoo3 over a GF256!

So i bloody well hope that SP1a & Autopatcher doesnt nuke her system.

Is her current installation still somewhat operational? You could always use Magic Jellybean Keyfinder to track down the original key used to install XP and then use your boot cd to clear the entire partition and install windows and go from there.

Just a thought.

That's probably a good idea. The product codes aren't tied to a particulr CD. What I mean is any XP Pro product code will work with any XP Pro cd. If it's OEM you need an OEM code etc. You can legally use your product code with a copy of someone elses CD. The majical jellybean keyfinder is the way to go. You can get it here.

I know how to tell what version the CD is, it's all in the PID.
xppro

WinXP's setupp.ini controls how the CD acts. IE is it an OEM version or retail? First, find your setupp.ini file in the i386 directory on your WinXP CD. Open it up, it'll look something like this:

ExtraData=707A667567736F696F697911AE7E05
Pid=55034270

The Pid value is what we're interested in. What's there now looks like a standard default. There are special numbers that determine if it's a retail, oem, or volume license edition. First, we break down that number into two parts. The first five digits determines how the CD will behave, ie is it a retail cd that lets you clean install or upgrade, or an oem cd that only lets you perform a clean install? The last three digits determines what CD key it will accept.

Now, for the actual values.
Retail = 51882 335
Volume License = 51883 270
OEM = 82503 OEM

System info may tell you what version is installed, not sure if it displays that it's OEM or not.

I might use that as a backup option.
So what specifically do i have to do with it?
