I just downloaded the following updates from Microsoft on a computer running Windows 98:

Windows Critical Update Notification 3.0
Root Certificates Update
Internet Explorer Error Reporting
Non-Gregorian Calendar Update for Office 2000 SR-1
Active Accessibility Update 1.2
Registration Wizard Update
Microsoft Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack
Windows 98 Troubleshooter Update

When I told the computer to reboot, it just shut down. Now when I press the power button, the computer begins to boot, gets to the Windows 98 logo and then just shuts down. Every time!

Anyone know what went wrong here? The computer was working fine before I decided to download the updates...

I don't know what happened, but I would try the following:

A) Try to boot to windows safe mode (press CTRL while computer boots and select Windows Safe Mode when the list comes up), then START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS - MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER X AND INTERNET TOOLS - RESTORE THE PREVIOUS WINDOWS CONFIGURATION - OK

If this doesn't get you back to a bootable situation, then I'd try to restore the registry:

B) Boot to the Windows Startup disk (or any bootable disk), go to c:\windows\command and type: SCANREG /RESTORE - and you will be presented with a list of previously saved versions of your registry. Select the most recent version and hopefully after it's done its thing you can reboot.

Anyone else think this is reasonable ?

Thanks for the reply. I found someone who had a similar problem in Windows 95 and he recommended restoring the winini.exe file from another computer. I took that file from a Windows 98 SE computer and copied it to my Windows 98 (1st ed) computer and then it booted just fine. I believe my problem is solved (unless someone tells me that there is a problem with this).
