"Downloadable software enhancement" for Scientific Atlanta 8000?

Optional Front Panel Universal Serial Bus (USB) Ports (requires downloadable software enhancement, when available)
Provides easy-to-access connection to home consumer devices such as USB keyboards

Optional Composite Audio/Video Inputs (Requires downloadable software enhancement, when available)
Supports interconnection to home consumer devices, such as VCRs, camcorders, or digital cameras for video pass-through to the TV

How do I get these purported enhancements?!? My TV only has one component video input (no S-Video 🙁 ), and if I could run my Xbox through the cable box, I could use that component video input for both together. Right now I have the cable TV going throug the regular coax input of the TV (yuck).

Current:

XBox ===== TV ----- Cable box

Desired:
XBox ===== Cable box ===== TV

("=" being component, "-" being regular coax)

Also it would be mad cool to have a keyboard attached to the cable box... though I'm not sure why I would want to do it. 😀

And yes, all the jacks are available on my unit.

BTW, which forum for this stuff? It seems to defy category -- do we need a home electronics forum? 🙂

Sadly, the information you are looking at is from the manufacturer of the box, your cable provider decides if it will make use of all of the features and capabilities, that box also has a firewire port and DVI port that could be activated with a firmware update but most likely wont happen because the cable co. doesnt need or want those features active.

To fix your connection problem, get a composite switchbox and a couple of composite cables and hook up the Xbox and cable box up to the inputs and the output to your tv and just switch when you want to use one or the other.

So it's up to TWC? Grrr! Thanks for the reply.

Edit: Found my answers.

Q. What is the USB port for on the back panel?
A. The front panel USB port (and optional back panel) are high-speed data ports that allow transfers of data at a rate of 11 Mbps. This port currently supports the Scientific-Atlanta IR Extender which allows you to store your set-top out of site up to 20ft away from your TV. S-A IR Extenders are only available through your cable operator. The User Guide can be found in the User Guides section of the Explorer eClub.
Q. What is the IEEE 1394 port on the back panel?

A. The IEEE 1394 port on the back panel is a very high-speed data port allowing transfers of data at up to 400 Mbps. It is not currently active, but is designed for future use.

Q. Can I view content from my VCR or camcorder on my TV with my Explorer 8000?
A. Not yet. A future software release will support pass-through mode, allowing audio/video from an external device such as a game system or camcorder to VIEW ONLY on the TV. This will not allow recording this content on the hard drive of the Explorer 8000, though.
