Download Windows XP Media Edition?

Hi folks, my Dell laptop is now unable to boot up, so I'm planning to replace the hard drive. However, I can't find the Windows CD. Since the hard drive is not working, I don't think I can get to the restore partition.

Is there a way to download a copy of Windows and use the code on the bottom of the laptop to activate it? This should be legal, right?:colbert:

yes its a little grey but is legal as you pay for the licence to use it not own a physical copy of the code on a CD - hence making a backup of your CD is not illegal. So as long as you have a unique license the source of the software is largely unimportant.

Bit torrent is your best bet but be wary of Virus / Trojans etc

Best bet is to try and borrow a full retail copy and install it with your key on the bottom of the machine.

It's not available on Technet, but you can either search for a torrent or look on ebay/craigslist for a CD.
