Download Win 7 OEM?

True.

Absolute worst case, you'll probably have to call MS to activate the Win7 install via phone. However, this shouldn't be a problem at all.

Will those discs actually accept an OEM key? I know previous versions of Windows were pretty picky about the keys they would take.

No they won't. That's why he said you'll have to phone in with the automated system. The automated system accepts the keys just fine.

If you have a legit key you can try using the Windows Software Licensing Management Tool instead of calling. At a command prompt type "slmgr.vbs /ato" (without the quotes) and hopefully it will activate. Worked for me.

The linked ISOs are for a retail install. You'd just install them without entering a product key. Then, once Windows is running in trial mode, you'd enter the product key and attempt to activate (which won't work due to the key). You'd then call Microsoft to do a telephone activation - never not had it to work before.

You know, I knew you could do this, but like an idiot it has simply never occurred to me to try it. Oh well, maybe next time I'll remember and give it a shot - might save a phone call....

If you edit the ISO file before you burn it, and delete the ei.cfg file from the sources folder, you can create a universal install disk. Instead of being locked into one version you will get a menu to pick which version you want to install and it will except OEM or Retail key. Your product code still needs to match the version you chose so you can't install Ultimate and then enter your Home Premium key, it will be rejected. All 32 bit DVDs contain all the 32 bit editions, and all 64 bit DVDs contain all the 64 bit editions. The ei.cfg file locks it into one edition and determines if its OEM or Retail. I made one of each and put them on bootable thumbdrives. Saves a lot of time when working on PCs for friends and family. The installs are wicked fast from thumbdrives too.

This. Edit the ei.cfg from "Retail" to "OEM" to make it take an OEM key. Or do what he said or people above said.
