Download via cable modem problem/question

When I try to download large files, like a Linux ISO, I typically get about 50-55Kbps download speeds (which is annoyingly slow). However, when I test my setup on DSLreports.com, it reports that I have 491kbps download speed and 100kbps upload speed. That doesn't seem to make sense to me. What am I doing wrong, or what is it about my setup that could be limiting my speed on downloading large files?

My set up:

Charter Pipeline cable service,
Motorolla cable modem
SMC barricade 7004BR router (old model)
4 computers conected by cat 5 cables (2 win 98SE, 1 win2K, 1 linux)
10/100 NIC's
Zone alarm 2.6 firewall software on win 98SE boxes, Symantec firewall on the win2k, no firewall on the linux box

By the way, I have this problem on all of the boxes. However, if I am moving large files between any two boxes, it is very speedy. Regular browsing and online gaming are very fast The problem seems to be only when downloading very large files from the net.

Is it a system limitation with my setup, or is it issues beyond my control like server load, code red and other virus activity, etc.? If there is a way to tweak my setup to make it faster, I would love to hear your thoughts..thanks.

YOu have to take into consideration the bandwith of the server you are trying to get these files from.

I too download at the same speeds that you mention above. I have a road runner cable modem. DSLreports lists my connection being as fast as 1091k/sec on off peak hours. After you run the DSLreports speed test click on the Graph button. I think you'll find that 400-500k/sec translates into about 43-55k/sec real download speed. As Wik pointed out, the speed of your server is also a factor to be considered. Here's an example for you. I can only download from Fileplanet at 40k/sec. The interesting part is that I can have three downloads going at the same time from Fileplanet, and all of them will be downloading at 40k/sec. If you ask me, I think most servers limit how much bandwidth you can suck down. I doubt that your connection is slowing down, you're probably being limited by the servers on the other end of the line. Just my 2c. 🙂

Cool, thanks. I can live with it, but I (like most people here probably) am forever in search of that one last tweak to make things faster.
