So everytime I download something from a website, it starts at like 500kb/sec and eventually throttles down to about 170kb/sec. Now I don't have the greatest connection(Cox Cable, linksys modem and router) but it's cable, and I figure if my download can start at one speed then it could stay at that speed.

So, why does my download speed throttle down, and is there anyway to keep it at optimal speed?

Does it go back up at all? You know one thing you might check is what time of day your downloading, cable is shared bandwidth so if it's at peak times of the day it may be because there are quite a few users in your neighborhood on at the same time. (just a shot in the dark, it could have something to do with your distance from your router to your computer.)
 
also could be the server. If you are downloading a popular file, the server's pipe could be filling up/get full.
 
I think what is happening is that it's not throttling down, but it's misreading the speed initially there. One reason for this is often times a program will start a download, sorta caching it, and then when you see it, it divides the data already downloaded by the time, and it is too high, and slowly levels itself off. what is your advertised speed?
 
Well it has always done this for every single computer and internet connection and download and time everytime. I think it's just funny that the first 5 seconds I download stuff at a really good rate, then the rest is at my standard rate of roughly 160-190 kb/s.

You would think this would be a popular issue, as I think a lot of people have the same issue. What I am essentially looking for is a utility download, that "pushes" my download speed up, or makes sure it doesn't lower. I'm just surprised this hasn't been discussed already.
 
Short of uncapping your cable modem (READ criminal activity bad) you can't increase your throughput other than if the ISP offers you a larger bandwidth connection.

Whenever you download, the process of file transfer will start in the background while the OS comes up with a window to display the transfer rate. It should take it a little while to come up with an accurate or reasonably accurate speed. Short of doing active network throughput monitoring, if you rely on the OS to "show" your throughput you will alway have some small inaccuracy in the initial start of file transfer.
 
Cool, ya I talked to a friend and he suggested TrueDownloader, you can get it from sourceforge.net i believe. Said it gets downloads of 500-600kb/s, I will try it out tonight and see.
 
K, got it, its a good program, can pause and resume any download at ease. I didn't get 500-600k speeds but that is simply because I don't have the same speed ISP my friend does.
Other than that tho, its a must-have in my book. It can be plugged in to browsers, so it places an option before Save to Disk "Download with TrueDownloader".
