download speed question

RU482

Lifer
I have a cable modem. I am currently downloading a file at about 475KB/sec. (according to mozilla)

when they talk about DSL speeds and cables sppeds, they mention 1Mb or 5Mb.

I assume the 475KB is kiloBYTES, whereas the 1Mb is 1000kiloBITS,

What's the conversion?

For instance, if I have a garanteed download bandwidth of 1Mb, how many KB/sec can I expect to have?

I ask because I am moving

1 byte = 8 bits

mathematically, anyway. And the bit speed is usually theoretical, so real-world losses are present as well.

wow, 1Mb service is craptastic compared to what I have now
good thing they are updating to 5Mb after end of the year

1 byte = 8 bits.

Doh, how did I do that?

I was even thinking it, too... "don't make that mistake... don't make that mistake..."

I bet that speed is amazing while neffing on ATOT, eh?

No need to get jealous. 😛

When someone is bragging about a faster connection, there is ALWAYS a need to get jealous! Although I can speed test mine and hit peaks of 11+ Mb/s, so I guess I don't have to be jealous, huh?

I was just kidding there, Goosey.... 😎
