Although I've heard a bit about Solaris, I don't have any experience with it. Is this a workstation OS as well, or mainly just for servers?

i was just at a "RE-PC" warehouse and they had a ton of sun (sparc station 5) machines "as-is" anywhere from $5 to $15 plus a bunch of other sun stuff. Too bad it's all "as-is" -- and too bad I have no use for it.
It would be alright if i had a monitor/keyboard/mouse... would make for a super cheap unix machine.

Is it work with AMD64, if i remember correctly it is 64bit

i'm not sure, but they have about 15 of these machines with 21 inch sony trinitrons in one of the computer labs at my school...nobody ever uses them though.

LOL, obviously not a CS dept at a reasearch university. I spent 14 hours a day in front of a solaris WS for a few years 🙂 Course, that was in my own office, not a bullpen.

sun solaris sparc machines are pretty good. We got about 50 of them @ our research lab in my Univ. I spend couple hours a day on it @ school.

TTOWN...where is "RE-PC" warehouse.
i would like to pick up an extra unix machine for 5-15, i could use one @ home for practice b/c i'm a CS major.
