I've been wanting to download Mario Bros 3 and some other games but most of the sites I came up with on google seemed shady or they just linked to a bunch of other sites.

Any help?

Yup don't be ripping off 20+ year old games now.......That is stealing.......From people who sell the cartages at yard sales.

lol, just messing around. Plus the companies are making a little by re-releasing them for a low price on virtual console.

I don't think your allowed to ask where roms are on here. I think you can talk about emulators? But that's it.

8-Bit and 16-Bit era games are almost free, either go on GoG.com to buy some games for very cheap or go on eBay or something similar where you can buy such games for less than a meal at McDonald's.

You can get the original NES cart for 8 bucks, the Game Boy advance port for $12, and the remake (along with 3 other Mario games) for the SNES for $23 on Amazon.

When you are searching for something on the internet, you gotta know where to look, and how to look for it. Otherwise, you get replies such as these you see here.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but no one ever helped me with this stuff, I did all this by trial and error. If you asked me to help you with something that don't involve piracy, I'd help you. But in this particular case, you are on your own. There is one simple truth. When someone wants something bad enough, he'll get it eventually. If you don't get something you want, you either didn't want it bad enough, or didn't want to go through what was required to get it. This is probably mostly true when it comes to finding stuff on the internet though. 😛

There are pirate forums that deal with these things specifically, and you can get plenty of help and advice there. I don't see anything wrong with illegally downloading old SNES, SEGA, NES, GBA games, because many of there are NOT available for sale anymore, and the only way to get em is through so called "illegal downloads". Game companies are hurting themselves by not selling these. They can keep making profit on these old titles, but instead, they leave the distribution to the pirates, or release lazy ports which are but a shadow of the original's former glory.

And what's with your problem with "shady" sites? There is absolutely nothing wrong with those.. So you'll get hit with some porn links... or a trojan... or even a virus! *gasp*
But you'll learn in the process! you'll learn which sites get you to what you want and which are just there to scam you.. You'll learn how to remove viruses, and in a particularly bad case, you'll learn how to format your hard drive and recover/fix/troubleshoot your system.

Piracy seems shady. Are you surprised? When you sleep with the dogs, you will wake up with fleas.

I think the hardware (SNES era and earlier) is out from under patent protection now, so if you have a cart, you can legally play the ROM using an emulator. I don't think the DMCA would have any teeth here in the USA as well because there was no DRM to speak of on the carts. Therefore, if you have the cart, you can legally download the ROM I believe.

Buy a fucking Wii and buy the old games off Virtual Console if you're such a chicken shit about stealing.

I think SMB3 on the Wii VC for 500 points ($5 MSRP) as well.

If you have a game Xchange in your area they have pretty much anything pretty cheap.

I was thinking about going in there to see if they have a DreamCast.

So... this stuff really is illegal?
God, I do a google search for SNES Emulator and I get a billion websites all with a billion downloadable ROM files.
How are those sites not cracked down on if it's illegal?

You're not likely going to find any Super Mario ROMS, they have all been taken down. There are still torrents though.

No, you can't.

Why is that exactly?

I thought everyone was legally entitled to make one backup of everything they purchase.

How is you downloading someone else's pirated ROM "making a backup"?

Really? That's hard to believe, considering the last time I was interested in nes/snes emulation (about 4 years ago) they were everywhere.

It doesn't matter.

The particular legal code that allows you to make a single backup of everything you purchase has either been changed or outright ignored for a long time now.

I'm no expert on digital law.

No, you can't.

Excuse me, it is legal for you to copy the ROM off the cartridge for backup purposes if you own the cartridge. I stand corrected.

Wouldn't this make something like Bleem! (PSOne emulator) illegal?

Technically you are are still using a piece of software that you own (CDROM Vs. ROM) to play a game on a different platform.

I always thought Golgatha's statement was correct ("Therefore, if you have the cart, you can legally download the ROM").

Assuming you own the cartridge, downloading a ROM would mean you are downloading a backup of your cartridge software, surely?
