Apparently, they operate in accordance with Russian copyright law, and charge a fair price based on what they need to pay to obtain and distribute the material. On their homepage, there is a link for legal info.

Maybe you meant the American industry that isn't paying artist the money they are owed, or maybe the American companies that charge me more than the CD rate per song for a lesser quality product. What do you mean????????

Wait, so what is the United States' official word on this about the Russian setup website? Are they okay with any of this?

There is no "official" rule.

Is the iTunes Music Store an option? Just because it wasn't mentioned yet.

If I was an artist or a sound studio, I'd prefer to recieve money on the conditions I negotiated rather than to recieve absolutely nothing from a vendor in Russia. Do you think you're a Robin Hood for artists??????

It boils down to this: It's technically legal in russia, and technically illegal in the U.S., but the 'location' of the transation is somewhat grey as is which laws you have to abide by. The RIAA will declare it illegal, but AFAIK, they haven't gone directly after anyone in the U.S. and the Russians refuse to prosecute, it has been speculated that AllofMP3 is owned by the russian mob, but I don't know if it's proven.

Basically, if you download from allofmp3, you're in a legal grey area.

The fact that by russian law, allofmp3 simply has to go out and buy a CD to distribute it, and are in no way obliged to pay any artist anything?

So, technically, the artist may recieve a small fraction of a dollar for ALL the copies of their song that allofmp3 sells.

From the allofmp3 FAQ: "Under the license terms, MediaServices pays license fees for all materials subject to the Law of the Russian Federation "On Copyright and Related Rights"." First, most musicians and right holders aren't even registered by this federation (be it because it's difficult to do this or because it would give allofmp3 a legitimate image even though they're selling stuff from others without asking them if they would like them to do this and how much money they want per sale). Second, there's pathetically few money in this federation's cashes because their member sell at very low prices. Therefor an artist or rights holder gets no or much, much less money if the songs are sold by this Russian institution.

Oh, and if you buy at allofmp3, you're punishing artists of independent labels more than those with contracts with the Big Four. While the latter often have "flat rate" contracts, paying per album sold is more common among indie labels.

A big laugh from my side to all allofmp3 customers who think they're fighting "The Man" or even supporting their artists. LOL. Against this background I don't even care if it is legal to buy there or not.

I think the allofmp3 customers probably don't really care..they're just sick of paying $18 for a CD.

YourMusic.com. $6 a CD, monthly subscription kind of thing. The awesome part is you can buy as many CDs during the month as you'd like (all for $6, free shipping) but you always have to buy the one "monthly" CD to keep your "subscription" active. I've found that buying the actual CDs, especially for something like 6 bucks to be alot easier on the mind and the wallet than crap like AllofMP3.com or iTunes. For CDs they don't have, Amazon.com with my free Amazon Prime 3-month trial works peachy :)

What $18? More like $11-$13, people that shop at CD shops like SamGoody need to be gunned down

Any new release CD seems to be close to (or over) $15, even at Wal-Mart. I usually pay $10-14..
