I am amazed at how resourceful and smart prisoners are, yet they keep ending up back in prison.

Oh, they're damaged goods alright but, so are the guards. It's pretty sad to see guards after even five years working in a prison. They are locked in and unfit for any other job for the rest of their lives.

Thats scary. My uncle was a comm tech in the marines. He got sucked into corrections. I have no idea what else he might have been. I think he's had the job for a good 18 years now.

why is that?

There is an emotional and mental toll on everyone associated with prisons. Guards are just as institutionalized as the inmates. Worse there are no programs to retrain guards for a role in society as there are for inmates. Additionally, the job culture prevents anyone questioning how they do their job. The net result is a group of disconnected malcontents who are unsuited and uninterested in doing anything else. It happens quickly and is almost guaranteed after five years. Couple that with a decent pay rate and most spending everything they earn and, they're locked into that job until they retire.
