It's problematic. First off, 32 bit WinXP is a better option as the driver support is greater.
I tried to do what you want to do on my HP laptop. HP had no XP drivers so I had to hunt down all the drivers by manufacturer and resort to the previously mentioned pcidatabase.
Some drivers I had to find on other notebook manufacturers websites, since the hardware manufacturer did not have drivers for notebook versions of their hardware and just referred you to the notebook manufacturer.
After I go it all installed I still had a problem with the screen randomly going blank. I tried numerous drivers and couldn't fix the problem.
Eventually I did a clean install off an oem Vista disk. That eliminated all the crappy HP software and really got the machine running well.
That said, I recommend to people thinking of buying a laptop and then doing their own downgrade to XP to buy a laptop that the manufacturer has the XP drivers for.

makes me wonder if he's even used the vista service pack upgrade yet...
it should run fine on 3gb.
if he wants a speed boost, upgrade the harddrive

Do you intend on giving any reasons for disliking Vista? Vista doesn't have the best default settings, but it's better than XP in pretty much every way once properly configured.(More stable, more secure, faster) The only real issue is learning where various settings have been moved to. If you're worried about it slowing your PC down, that is easily fixed without changing OS.

Whoa, negative on that. Vista is better in terms of looks and Wireless management. Everything else from the file structure to it always indexing everything eating up memory is a greater loss in speed from the OS perspective. Gaming FPS is about the same speed-wise. There is nothing to be gained from using Vista.
