I tried vista on my older system with 1 GB ram and it was very slow. I suggest to not upgrade to vista unless you have at least 2 GB of ram and a newer system. I wasn't expecting a miracle but that is what you get when trying a new os on a 2 year old system.

I have a dual boot setup (two seagate 320gb in raid-0 with vista sp1) and a maxtor 200gb with windows xp sp2. For the most part, I use Vista but when something isn't working in Vista - I just reboot and install it on XP (a bit tedious but it works). I also play games on XP (mainly because I can disable Wireless Zero Configuration in XP and still have a wireless connection but in Vista if I disable WLAN AutoConfig, wireless doesn't work at all). WZC / WLan Autoconfig causes me to have huge ping spikes (jumps to 1000+ms for a few seconds from 20ms) every 30 - 45 seconds.
