My brother-in-law was given a 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium and it seem it doesn't like his hardware. (A64 4200+, DFI NF4 Ultra, 2GB ram, 8800GTS 640GB, XP Home 32-bit). He has no use for the 64-bit OS at this time and all he does with his machine is game, surf, email, and photos.

Can I use a Vista HP 32-bit disc and the COA code off the 64-bit version to get a EULA compliant install? Will this even work?

Edit: Yes, I searched, both here and in general to find an answer. Nothing. :frown:

Impossible! Vista is flawless and it's your hardware that is the problem. Throw your hardware away and buy a completely new computer! Keep doing this until you get a computer that works well with Vista (remember that it's not vice versa since Vista works with everything - it's flawless).

While I appreciate the sarcasm (I majored in it in college), I'm hoping for someone to add information rather than wit. ;)

There is no difference between 32bit and 64bit keys, so you will have no problem using the existing key to install a 32bit version of Windows Vista. However it may be fruitful to search for a clean copy of Vista, HP may have loaded extra software on their disc.

I'm curious though what problems you're having with Vista x64. There's nothing special about the hardware listed, it's odd to hear it's having problems.

Thanks for the reply ViRGE. I'm also a little baffled about the hardware issue. I haven't been hands on with the system yet, so it could be that my bro-in-law has done something goofy and didn't tell me. I think I'm going to have to head over and see what's going on. I suspected that the keys wouldn't care about 32 vs. 64, but it's reassuring to hear someone say it. I'll probably head over there tomorrow afternoon and see what's up. I'll post back when I get it figured out. Maybe it will be helpful to someone else (if they can find it!).

So I have no idea why, but when I loaded up my 32-bit Vista, it booted right away, I used the COA key from the 64-bit version, and we had the whole things done in about a half an hour.

If my bro-in-law really wanted the 64-bit version, I'd be a little frustrated, but he has no use for it right now. He's just happy to have a working rig. I'm happy it took so little time. So I guess everyone is happy. :D
