These things suck.

Thanks.

A good thing to have is actually some ambesol or even get some cloreseptic spray (sp? (sore throat spray)).... it nums it and makes it much easier to eat things. Just an idea. 🙂

man im just getting over one. how come this is so common yet we dont even know what causes it or how to cure them?

a little salt goes a long way...towards making your canker sore hurt like hell. It does help though. I've got a minor one now that i havent chomped on or anything so i'm not gonna fvck with it.

Take 1000-2000mg of vitamin C everyday along with 25mg of zinc per day to help keep these out of your system. As for getting rid of them, hydrogen peroxide is supposed to work really well (don't swallow it )

Did you know that gel toothpaste can increase your chance of getting canker sores? What kind of toothpaste you using?

Good point, I also changed to "Tom's" flouride-free and SLS-free toothpaste and that's what has helped the most.

Stress and diet makes a difference. I find that if I eat a lot of red meat I seem to get them more often.

They suck. I've had them on and off throughout my life since I was a child. The over-the-counter remedies mentioned by others here help alleviate the pain.

I think there are a lot of people in here confusing COLD sores (a manifestation of HSV-1--a virus) with CANKER sores (a manifestation of a bacterium caused by lacerations in the mouth, usually).

the cause of canker sores is not known.

That's why I said usually. I guess some people get them for other reasons, but it seems the most common are those you get when you lacerate your gums or the inside of your cheek. I've heard it's a bacteria, but then I just read that it's not known... *shrug*.

What helped me GREATLY reduce canker sores is Rembrant toothpaste for Canker Sore sufferers. That stuff worked wonders for me. I used to get canker sores once or twice a month. Now I might get one a year.
