Just a quick text, you can probably find better elsewhere.

Lost money is not as unfortunate as lost character.

Show some dignity, I'm sure your mom must have hugged you more than that.

My Mom taught me if you play with fire you will get burned.

My Mom taught me not to steal the resources of others. Guess yours never did?

What the fsck is wrong with you? Seriously. At least other trolls are moderately entertaining.

It may be good if you're looking for an opportunity to put some money into the market.

Unless you need to cash out funds this month the drop means nothing but a chance to buy more shares.

Dips are only scary if you're thinking short-term instead of long-term. The mutual fund shares I bought in late 1999 pre-crash have recovered their full value so even a major correction is nothing to panic about if you invest in good index funds and are patient.

Hitting 20K posts, now that's scary! :)

Very true.

It's not so bad if one only get's burned occasionally, assuming one is covering his ass.
Getting burned in the ass is never fun.

When did this discussion fall off topic?

I know what shorting is, my point is that there are things like the benefits I earn as an employer that are affected that I don't have a chance to mettle with. A drop is :( no matter what it is.

Would this be a good reason to contribute less towards your 401k?

I already bought some more stocks and they are up already. Good buying opportunity indeed.

If your company matches, hell no.

you're supposed to switch out of equity funds and move to money market/bond funds before summer starts.

Yes.

Do you have an IRA set up yet? If not, maybe you can just do the 1 to 1 match, and use the rest of the money to put in an IRA and get a tax break. Also, IRA's give you more flexibility in what you can invest in. With high interest rates, you could invest in bonds or soemthing safe.

My Mom taught me if you play with fire you will get burned.

Its one thing to revel in ones misery, its another to root for it.

I don't think you're an asshat. Immature, bitter, and insecure, but not an asshat. Its a big big world out there, but just keep trying to knock it down and you'll eventually get it down to your size where you can finally achieve some self-esteem. Good luck to you.

So if you invest in stocks for the long run you lose all your money? another great dmcowen comment.

401k and Traditional IRA contributions both reduce taxable income, the tax break is exactly the same. Both reduce your tax payment now, and both are fully taxable when you withdraw the money at retirement. When you change jobs and "roll over" your 401k to a brokerage account it becomes a Traditional IRA.

A Roth IRA uses after-tax money (does not reduce your tax bill) but grows tax-free so you pay no taxes when you take out the money when you retire.

The main reason to reduce your contribution to 5% would be _if_ you have the self-discipline to put the other 5% (or more) into a Roth IRA account and buy good stock index funds from a good company like Vanguard.com.

Reducing your overall investment amount now is exactly the opposite of what you should be doing. "Buy low sell high." The market has dropped a little lower, you should be happy that your 401k money is being used to buy low.
