I work at a nationwide retail store, and up until two weeks ago we had a restroom availalbe for the public. Now we don't, due to a string multiple vandalisms recently costing us quite a bit of money to repair and clean. We have since closed the bathroom to the public. Some guy comes up after seeing the sign and the locked bathroom, and starts yelling at me. Bla Bla Bla it's against the law i need to see your manager bla bla bla. i got him my managers name card and told him good luck with that. he says he'll be calling the city tomorrow and his lawyer. Wow, i wish i had that much free time.
It's not a legal requirement since we don't serve food nor expect the public to congregate. I looked it up online and found this to be true for two other states, though i haven't found the citation for California, anybody happen to know? Would this be county or city statutes we're dealing with?

LOL

And you're right, that it depends on the type of building, occupancy load, existing or new construction, and so forth. Either way, you should never discuss anything to customers about legalities especially if you don't own the business.

They're literally people who come into stores on purpose just to pick a fight with you on these matters and they are degenerates of society, so don't stoop to their levels. There are also secret customers from organizations that would love to get you fired. I'm sure your next experience is when someone brings in their pet and say "if I leave my dog out in my car and he gets sick I can hold you liable" crap or when someone comes in on cruches and told you they slipped outside on the pavement.

But before doing so you have to inform them that your hand is known to contain carcinogens which may cause cancer.

There are a number of businesses in CA that cater to the public but do not have public restrooms.

Work at a 711 down town here as assistant manager. We don't have public washrooms either. Don't need to legally unless you are a restaurant with 10 or 12 seats or more or a gas station, the food we sell isn't meant to be eaten on premises. I get that from people all the time.

Unlike money assholes do grow on trees. And it's always asshole season.
