double-sided vs single-sided RAM

I know double sided RAM has the modules on both sides, but are the commonly sold RAM nowadays single-sided or double-sided? Also, people say you can't run double-sided with 1T? Does that only apply if you have 4 sticks?

I'm planning on building and overclocking this:

3200+ Venice
DFI Ultra-D
OCZ Value 1GB (2x512) ?
X800XL
160GB Western Digital SATA II
some cheapo 450W power supply ?
 
Rev. E processors should run 2 sticks of RAM @ 1T just fine. I think it's when you pop in 4 sticks it kicks down to 2T, but the difference really is negligable from what I've seen.

I'm building the exact same system except a 3000+ Venice. Don't skimp on the power supply or you will regret it.

IN fact all I'm waiting on is my Fortron BlueStorm 500w PS. Everything else is installed and the PS should come tomorrow... *wipes drool from face*

Think of it lkie an insurance policy. Cheapo PSUs often have very weak rails that tend to fluctuate, which could cause instability. Also, They can "blow up" and destroy parts of your system. You definately want to spend over $60 on a PSU...

Wrong. Venice cores can run with all banks full at full speed.
 
I have the Fortron Blue Storm 500W ATX12V V2.0, super quiet <23DB and have not regretted purchasing it. It is really a quality product.

i heard crucial makes some but i never looked at it. 2t means very little in real world performance on the a64, 1-3% in most and 1% in cames from what i ran.

do a search in cpu/oc'ing and zebo had a thread onit. dfi street has had similar discussions.

for stock its ok, but if you're oc'ing, the dfi will choke that psu. it did mine anyway. spend the exra 20$ and get an enermax, antec or the fortron 500.
 
Yeah, right now I have Corsair 2-2-2-5 chips... and they fill 2 out of the 3 banks I have on my board. When I put another double sided stick on the board it will step the ram down from 400mhz to 333mhz. Would it be possible to put a stick of single sided ram in the third slot and still be able to run at 400mhz? Board is the Asus K8V SE Deluxe.

AnandTech tested this, this is not true. Venice(Rev. E) CPUs still drop down to 2T.

I have an ABIT KV8 where I've done exactly this, and am running 3 sticks at 400mhz(1T command rate too!); 2 GEIL 512MB sticks, and a 1GB Kingston. That said, this is not supported and I have to set the dividers to what I wanted to do this, but it seems to work fine. But as long as it's not supported, there is no guarantee that this will work for you, I may have just gotten lucky.
 
I have no idea how much that Fortron PSU is, but you might look at the Enermax 460W PSU as well with 33 amps on the +12V rail.

Wrong. Venice cores can run four banks of memory at only 2T.
 
From what I've read around the web, the Fortron Bluestorm is among the best in it's price range. That's what I'm using and couldn't be happier.
