I'm a huge history buff, but found out that I love anthropology (took an intro course and an archeology course and loved both).

Is it a good idea to double major, or should I go the major/minor route?

How much time does it add to getting out?

I think it looks impressive and if you really want the depth of both subjects, go for the double major. I'm doing a double major atm in bioengineering and electrical engineering computer science.

Personally, I think it's a good idea, but only because of what I plan on going into after I graduate. If I wasn't taking 18 credits a semester, It'd take a total of 5 years, but I think I'll be able to get it down to 4 to 4.5 years total.

Most people I know in the Arts and Sciences school double major because of the compatability of the two majors.

To be quite honest, both those degrees are quite useless without going to grad school. So, you better plan on gradschool afterwards no matter what. I knew my econ degree would be relatively useless afterwards, unless I wanted to number crunch. I've paired it with a high demand degree and it'll fit perfectly with what I want to do after I graduate. (Not to mention how amazingly well the two degrees fit together class wise)

That being said, I still plan on going to grad school afterward, a few years after I graduate for probably an MBA.

It all depends on what you want to do when you get to the real world. Don't waste time and money if you don't need to, only if it really helps you attain your goals.

I double majored in English and Law & Society and took 5 years to graduate instead of 4. I was interested in Law but took English to improve my analytical and writing skills. Personally I feel it was worth it, but I think it also depends on the major and what you plan to do after you graduate.

Yeah. That's what everyone tells me.

I want to be an archaeologist/cultural resource manager and a teacher...so...yeah...

I had a friend who double majored in astronomy and theater. She wanted to become a star.

at the same time, I know someone who majored in Anthropology and minored in Sports Management. Shortly after graduation he got a job with the San Diego Chargers, but he also had some pretty impressive internships and experience such as working for Michael Jordan's Flight School. For him his major didn't matter, it was about his experience.

Exellent choice!

Do they actually teach history majors how to think, or is it just rote memorization? Archeology might be fun, especially if you get to dig stuff up.

It crossed my mind today too about double majoring. Currently, I'm thinking of majoring in BioChemistry or Chemistry, but someone pointed out to me that if you majored in both, then it would only be an extra 3-4 courses, hence my thoughts about majoring in both.

Edit:
But then I thought about it even further, and to major in each one requires independent research, so it would be impractical to double major as such. Now it just comes down to actually choosing which direction to go in.

I doubled in Biology and English. ...then minored in Genetics and Film (we didn't have Genetics major at the time)
Definately worth it. If I could go back, I would have done Biochem instead of Bio though...too general. Took me 5 years, with summer school most years, and overlaoded time during the semesters (Bio and English don't overlap...at all)

I say go for it...but drop the History. All you need is curiosity, a willingness to learn independantly, and a good year or so to travel.
Although...I can't imagine what you'll do with archaeology. You know, it's not all fedoras, whips, biblical treasures, and short asian kids with one-liners....
