I think we need less spam in OT.

It was just the first thing that leapt to mind I guess.

Ellipsis is three dots. Two dots just looks like a typo...

Related: two exclamation marks (!!) instead of one or three also looks off, though it probably isn't grammatically incorrect.

It is an ellipsis, it looks like three periods. But it isn't three periods.

… «--- Ellipsis (Alt-0133)
... «--- Three periods, means the typer tried but has no idea how to do it right
.. «--- Two periods, means the typer is an idiot who has no idea what he is doing

Look closely when typing, you will notice how the three periods doesn't look the exact same as an ellipsis. The ellipsis is one character, you can only select it as a group. Three periods are three separate characters, you can select them individually or in groups. When typing, you cannot insert any text between the dots in the ellipsis character; when typing, you can insert text between the dots of three periods. Just try replying to my text and try typing inside the ellipsis in the quote.

What sorcery! But Alt-0133 requires two more keystrokes than three periods, so...

Your image looks broken. This forum has a bad habit at that. I wonder if you used the attachment feature?

an ellipsis is followed by a period if the sentence ends after the ellipsis.

so it would like like: "The court finds that the defendant is guilty … ."

also note the spaces before and after the ellipsis.

When writing for publication, you do it this way ". . ." and it usually means you're editing out needless words in a quote.

"When we heard the explosion. . .we ran. Fast."

If someone uses two dots instead of three to indicate an ellipsis, I think to myself that there's a greater chance that the individual wears a helmet, and they probably Capitalize random Nouns too.

Sometimes two exclamation marks become part of history.

Double dots started getting common when people who try to double space between sentences (it's actually NOT the correct way to type in nearly all scenarios) started using Blackberry phones and smartphones. They type a period, then hit the spacebar twice. The device treats double-space as a shortcut for a period followed by a single space. Added to the period that was already typed manually, you get 2 periods and a single space.

I despise MS not setting Word to trigger that as a default error, would teach people to correct it themselves instead of me having to do it.

Alt+0133 doesn't work on Ubuntu :astonished:

That's actually something I miss from Windows.

Edit: Apparently it's ALT+SHIFT+U. A 'u' will appear in your text box. Then type the hex code of the character, then a space.
