Double Checking monitor upgrade vs video card

Guess I'm not really on topic with all the 7800, 7900, and 8800 topics, but here goes.

System mentioned in signature.
For those who can't see for some reason...
Gigabyte K8NSC motherboard, AGP/DDR400 dual channel/SATA150/Athlon64
3700 San Diego Core Athlon 64 Socket 939
2gb 2x 1024mb Kingston DDR400
EVGA Geforce6600 256mb AGP
430W Antec Truepower II
Old Old File Server Case, no Front side USBS(/sigh) but good size/room.

**backstory, skip if need**
Ok, now on to the point.
I have had 2 KDS 717 monitors that have gone bad on me in 1 year, both with same issue of random black screening after being on for a while(not power saving.. just screen going black with light still green... power cycle restores display for 3~ sec, then black again... unless you let it set for hours then it works for a while).

I've posted here in tech support, and a few other places, and the only real answer I got, which I knew when I bought it that it was cheap, but I needed a monitor that day, and friends had good track record with KDS... is that the monitor is a known piece of junk. I replaced it being that was 15$ shipping vs 200$ new monitor.. but I'm not a fan of paying another 15-20$ shipping to replace this thing every 6months.
**end backstory**

I'm still deciding on brand, but I am buying a name brand 19", likely a Viewsonic, NEC, Samsung, etc.... to replace my junk 17". Should the Geforce6600 be able to handle a 19" with 1024x768 or possibly 1280x1024 gaming in the future? No Battlefield or FEAR or anything like that. More of a Real Time Strategy/RolePlaying... I currently play a little Warcraft3/War3 expansion and also an older MMORPG called Everquest.

6600 plays those fine and does lag in certain situations in Everquest, but being the code is 6 year old patchwork, I think it may not be fully efficient code. It could also be processor too I guess.
Will putting out a 1024x768 or 1280x1024 to a bigger space(19") be more of a strain on the 6600?
