IBM Thinkpad T42 (or whatever next model is, should be out late May) will probably have just that....but they come at a price....

realistically, what kind of discount are we talking about? say you have a $1500 centrino notebook now. what would the new price be after they discount the centrino 1 hype? will it be only 1400? or even less than that?

I too have my doubts about any immediate, drastic price drops. Sure, the prices of PM's will drop, but the key is the release of Sonoma (aka. Centrino II). I bet that when the whole package (Alviso, Dothan, etc) is released together, we will see huge price drops on Centrino and/or PM products. Of course, this is barring any unforseen defects or problems with the new technologies!

yeah and think about it from a business point of view. most things have a short life cycle and you don't want to sabotage sales by discounting things too much and encouraging people to wait until just after a new release to buy things. you want them to buy all the time - hence don't discount things too much.
I know some companies will, but I'm thinking of IBM specifically. I don't think the prices will drop too mych there.

I disagree. What often happens is that a company will bring out a new model with a faster processor, but will have stock of the previous model left over. They still want to sell it, so they clearance it in different ways. Apple did this with their g3 iBooks, and IBM might start doing this with t40's on their ebay site. They want to find the sweet spot that will clear their inventories, but but not undercut the new product. So there will be a significant, but not mindblowing, discount.
