Now to the discussion. Let us keep it civil folks !!!

Is the Intel Pentium M (Dothan) the ultimate PC chip? Considering the limited selection of motherboards and configuration options as well?

It seems the lower-end Dothan chips like 730 and 750 are reaching insane speeds and dethroning Athlon 64 !!!

clearly we already know Dothan is the fastest x86 chip clock-for-clock !!!

I would like some unbiased and honest opinion and experience here folks. None of the usual "amd is better" or "dothan sucks" crap that you AMD zealots routinely post.

Agree with screech. Even the San Diego, at stock speeds, beats the Dothan.

You can't crown something the "ultimate PC chip" when it doesn't even sell in desktops in stock configurations, and won't go past 2.1 ghz at stock, either.

FX-57 crushes it.

oooh you mean a $1100 processor beats a $200 one? imagine that !!!

dothan at equal clock will run neck and neck with fx-57

in gaming dothan will beat the fx-57 ( at an equal clock rate )

also keep in mind the thermals of Dothan. Can FX-57 come close to ~35 watts? oh I didn't think so !!!

Yes, it is. It runs very cool and quiety. It can overclock to 5 GHZ. It rips the shlT out of AMD in games. It doesn't even need dual core to beat AMD dual core in multi-threaded applications. Finally, the dothan has this new technology called speedstep. This allows you to overclock to a high number like 5GHZ, but still keep it cool when you are not running any applicatins.

AMD simply can not keep up. It has NO answer to speedstep. Its processors can't even dream of 4.9 GHZ, yet alone 5 GHZ. Finally, AMD's processors get owned in games by the 5GHZ dothan. The dothan doesn't even need 2 cores to beat AMD in games. It just needs one.

Another factor that makes the Dothan superior is that it has more cache than AMD processors. While AMD is limited to 1MB, the Dothan has 2MB. This gives 2 times more performance right there. Also, teh Dothan has access to DDR2 memory. We all know 2 is better than 1, and DDR2 implies just that. 512 megabyes of memory is actually "virtually" 1GB. There is only 512 MB of memory, but WIndows thinks that there is 1GB, so it will do more with less. Another Advantage DDR2 gives is higher frequency. With frequencies at 1GHZ, DDR2 beats DDR. With no bottleneck in memory, the Dothan flies by, while AMD is bottlenecked like hell because it relies on DDR400 memory. Because of the 2MB of cache and the 1ghZ ddr2 memory, the Dothan waits less cycles to catch up, making memory bottlenecking almost a no issue.

Finally, the Grandaddy of all reasons why the Dothan Pwnz the AMD is because of its design. While the Dothan has a similar amount of pipline stages compared to the AMD processors, the Dothan has "extreme" pipeline stages. This allows the Dothan to do more work than the AMD processors. AMD, with its normal pipeline stages, can't even come close to the Dothan's performance in games. This is why a measly 2.0 GHZ dothan will beat any AMD X2 in games, even though the X2 has twice the power of the regular AMD 64s.

Dothan is not the ULTIMATE chip... it is good at games but gets smoked at alot of other things.

amd user simply cannot admit any superiority by Intel and refuse to discuss or debate the issues ... they rather lock all the threads and ban anyone and everyone who doesn't see things there way !!!

If you can't discuss why the DOTHAN is obviously Superior to thee AMD 64 DO NOT REPLY.

I repeat if you can't discuss why the Dothan is obvoiusly superior to the AMD64 and X2, do not reply. Your wasting the time of the ultamite processor, the Intel Pentium M Centrino Platform based , 2MB of low latency cache , ultra slim, sleek, cool, desgined by Isreal, low pipeline, higly efficient, amazing at games and office applications Dothan processor.

If you are brand loyal to anything, you've simply got a large orfice in your head. When shopping for CPU's (or any product for that matter), I concentrate on one thing only, best quality/performance for the money.

I like the fact that a company with revenues 1/15 of its' competitors can survive and force the advancement of technology. Doesn't take a rocket scientest to figure out the consumer benefits greatly not only from that advancement, but also enjoys reduced cost as a result of the competition.

In my opinion, ALL fanboys are losers. I'll use intel, AMD, even Cyrix (comeback baby!) if the price/performance is there. I certainly do not want to see a monopoly on CPU's. We'd still be using expensive 1 GHz P3's if AMD didn't choose to fight.

I am using an OC'd AMD A64 3500+ Winchester which is the best CPU I've ever owned from a cooling and performance standpoint. It replaced an Intel P4 2.8C 30 capper Northwood, which was also a very cool running and performed great. The 2.8C replaced an Athlon XP 1800+.

A little perspective is all that is needed....

Dothan, if we are so dumb and you are so smart provide links.

No it isn't close to the ultimate CPU. It has horrible FPU and Math intensive performance. Would you like me to cite some links where i show that this is the case. As for games, the difference is negligible. Another weak point of the Dothan processor is inherit in many low clock high IPC processors. Media encoding benefits much more from a high clockspeed, the Dothan is not good at all in media encoding.

Dothan to keep it simply, P-M is a promising design (Low Heat, Very efficient Micr Architecture (High IPC)), that is why intel is basing there next gen CPU's off of it. However it is not the miracle chip as you would have us believe.

Edit: As for multi-tasking performance, the Dothan chip is not dual core, so immediately all the Pentiums and the Dual Core Athlons slaughter it. Utterly kill it. The P-M is slightly comparable to the Single Core Athlon 64's in terms of multi-tasking performance.

Who cares? You want the ultimate PC chip, you look for the chip that:

a). actually ships in desktop PCs(Dothans do not)

b). has the best performance at stock(Dothan does not)

You want the ultimate PC chip, you pay the ultimate price.

Pentium Ms are inconvinient to use, even for some overclockers, and they simply do not ship at stock speeds that let it hang with the FX-57, or even any San Diego for that matter.

Ms also have problems in some science apps. In fact, they're not all that hot once you get outside of the SuperPi 1M and gaming arena.

They're efficient, which makes them attractive, but they're not suitable for desktop use at this time. It's a niche chip for notebook users and overclockers who can put up with the lack of available platforms. It does not qualify for "ultimate PC chip". Keep waiting for the Conroe, buddy.

This is ridiculous, who even cares?

I will use whatever CPU provides the best value... and right now that's a standard A64.. an overclocked Venice CPU will perform just as good as anything else almost, and for very little $.

I'm not unhappy with the performance I've had from any of my CPU's really. meh.
