Dothan Question

I think I have decided to finally order myself a ThinkPad T41 with a 1.6 GHz processor (Banias). However, my question is can the new dothan chips fit into the spot where the 1.6 processor is when I want to upgrade? For instance, eventually replacing my 1.6 Banias with a 2.0 Dothan. Is that possible?

Also, how difficult is it to actually upgrade the processor in a notebook?

Unless the product line you are looking at gets the firmware & BIOS upgrade from the manufacturer, you most like wouldn't be able upgrade to a Dothan from a Banias.

Now if you haven't bought the laptop yet and your manufacturer of choice offers the 2.0 Dothan, as well as the 1.6 Banias; then you would be able to upgrade, as the mobo firmware & BIOS will have already gotten the upgrade (this upgrade tended to hit all of the tier1 laptop makers back in early Q1 of this year, in anticiaption of the release of the Dothan CPU).
