Dothan, P4EE, or Athlon64 for gaming laptop? Alienware or Voodoo?

Hi guys. I'm getting a new laptop that I want to use for gaming.

What is the performance of a 2GHz Dothan, compared to a P4 3.2GHz or 3.4GHz Extreme Edition, and an Athlon 64 3700+? Whatever processor I go with, I will probably have 1GB of memory, Radeon Mobility 9700 128MB, 60GB 7200RPM hard drive, 15-15.4 inch screen. Are there any benchmark comparisons between laptops with these three processors?

I'll be using this laptop daily and carrying it with me. I'd like it to be able to do the new FPS games decently.

I have it narrowed down to Voodoo and Alienware. Anyone have laptops from these guys? How is the quality? Thanks.

If you will be spending that much on the processor, I would plunk the extra 200$ and get a mobility 9800.

Personnally, I would go with the 3700+ but that is just my preference (my 9100 has a PIV since Dell does not offer A64)

Now i have heard bad things about both venders you listed. As they them selfs don't make the laptops you can purchase them elsewhere. I would suggest something along the lines of this or this. Since you want the newest games is why i said those over one of my Favs which is the Emachine 68** series. Now if you want batt life then go with the Donathan chipset but know it will be slower.

im pretty sure ibuypower and cyberpower = the same company.. their prices are the ssame.. i was going to buy a laptop off them until i started reading the reseller ratings they seem horrible that is the reason why im still holding off for other companies

with that being said if you want battery life on a gaming laptop i would go for dothan 2.0ghz otherwise amd64

Or you could go with this one. Not a bad setup but you have to upgrade the mem and the Hdd but all n all not a bad system if u don't mind the red.

I have a Sager, which also has the same ODM as Alienware and Voodoo. Meaning same PC no retarded glowing eyes and $$$ saved.

If stretching the battery life is a concern, Dothan. If the most power (period) and best gaming performance is your priority, then no question the A64 is your only choice.

Another recommendation for Sager/Clevo, and the excellent people at PCTorque. Superb customer service.

This excellent post by ThunderPC pretty much sumarizes everything.

My suggestion (being money no object) is a loaded Sager 4750..... Heck, if I didn't have a M6805 I would get that Sager, but who knows, maybe in a few months 😉

Even better, wait when they offer the mobility radeon 9800. For reference, Dotham was able to keep up with the K8 in gaming using a mobility radeon 9600 according to Anand's review.... but once the graphics card is updated you will see things the way they are. That means, the K8 beating the other 2 quite handily.

The following can be viewed in its uncut form here:

"There have been a lot of questions about the Mobile 9800 now that other brands are announcing their upcoming models that will have the 9800. What has people so confused is why there have been no information of a new Sager model with the 9800 when they've worked to remain leading edge on performance.

After much testing Sager/Clevo have decided to pass up the 9800 to put all their work into a PCI-E based machine that is right around the corner. Expect to see this thing out early Q4 this year (some time after next month). What's so great about it? Well, it will have the latest video graphics in PCI-E form and has the potential for a nice jump in performance. The end user will be able to upgrade and swap their own video card and have their choice between using one of either of the two major graphics manufacturers (as their options become available if not with initial release).

There are no official product line release announcements yet, but things are looking good so I can't help but get it posted up in the information and rumors section to share =)

Expect to have the full specs by the end of next month."

"Also, to add to the info, if all goes as Sager plans, the graphics will not be from the X600 either. It will be based off the next level of graphics from the two leading manufacturers. It may release with just one and the other option become available shortly after. It depends on when the manufacturers are able to get what's already been tested out the door."
