Intel to delay next-generation mobile chip

The mobile chip had been expected to make its debut in mid-February. It is now scheduled to ship in the second quarter of 2004, Intel President Paul Otellini said on Wednesday during a conference call to discuss Intel's fourth-quarter earnings.

Validation tests turned up a glitch that would hamper the manufacturability of the chip, according to Otellini. Dothan is Intel's first to be manufactured on a 90-nanometer process.

Although Dothan's performance was not affected by the glitch, a circuitry redesign was required, according to Otellini. That redesign caused Intel to miss its goal of beginning shipments in the past quarter, he said.

"Being conservative, you're probably looking at about two months. It's more likely to be (launched) in the beginning of (the second quarter) then the end," he said.

Well, at least maybe the Mobile 9700 will be readily available by then too...
 
I knew it, I just knew it! A rare occassion where I hate to be right. I wonder how many manufactorers will delay the release of the new laptops due to this Q2 approximation?

I don't think we'll be seeing many new models of notebooks even with the release of Dothan, the reason being that Dothan will be working with the 855 chipset and Pro/2100 wireless.

I am guessing that manfacturers will have small updates. For example, IBM will probably release a T42 notebook with Dothan that will be almost the same as the T40 and T41, aside from the CPU.

Major model updates probably won't happen until the 2nd half of the year, when Intel releases the Alviso chipset (2nd generation Centrino w' DDR2, PCI-E, and SATA).

The benefits of this chipset will go beyond speed increases. DDR2 memory consumes less power due to lower voltage, and PCI-E add-in cards (like wireless) are also smaller and less power hungry.

I don't think this platform will be revolutionary in terms of performance, but it will certainly extend battery life.
 
It will be interesting to see if they keep the rest of their roadmap the same or push everything back. By the time Dothan is released, it might be worthwhile to wait a few months for Alviso. I see a reference to Alviso's "Launch on 34th week of 2004," which I think would make it around early August. Then of course, maybe I could hold out for a 533FSB 2GHz at the end of the year with a PCI-Express Radeon 12000 Pro TwinTurbo MAX...

At this rate, I'm never gonna buy a laptop.
