Dot3 bump mapping

Freeze

Ok, I was reading the Sacrifice forums, and one of the developers said that the next patch would include support for dot3 bump mapping (for the cards that support it). So my question is what exactly is it and what cards currently support it? I assume that the GF2 and Radeon support it, but I may be way off. Thanks

GeForce(all variations), Radeon and the Kyro(I and II although last I was aware there was a bug in the drivers so it didn't display properly and it also doesn't work at all in Giants currently, although that is a game bug).

What does it do? Simply put I guess you could say it adds bumps to everything. That may sound simplistic but when the bumps interact with the lighting it truly is an impressive feature. Screenshots don't do it justice, but take a look here. The best example in that shot is Robo aka Kabuto(the big mofo in the center of the screen) but you truly can't appreciate how impressive it is until you see it in motion and see the shadows in those cracks based on the angles he is facing.

It can be used for all sorts of effects, overall it is better then EMBM though in the case of water EMBM is better.

what kind of performance hit (if any) does dot3 cause? It looks really cool. So this is going to make a good looking game even better.

The performance hit question is interesting and a bit confusing.

For Evolva, it's almost exactly 50% for every board I've seen tested(frame rates roughly halved).

For Giants, the hit is right around 0%(nearly no hit most of the time).

What are we more likely to see become common? Not sure, I hope that Sacrifice comes through with Giants type efficiency though I honestly haven't looked much into Dot3 on performance issues yet and am not sure why the two games display such huge variations in terms of performance hit.

This will make games look quite a bit better if used properly. Evolva looks like sh!t without Dot3, pretty d@mn cool with it, Giants looks killer without it and even better with. Evolva seemed to be a case of developers relying on Dot3 to carry the visuals for the entire game while Giants clearly is way ahead of the curve even without Dot3.

Sacririfce could deinately benefit from this, I'll likely play through the game at the very least once more start to finish if the patch comes through(already played through it five times, once straight through for each god).

I thought I was the only soul sad enough to play the game for each god 🙂. Still haven't beaten it yet though. I haven't touched it since new year's and I want to at least finish it with one god. 😛 I am at various points into each campaign except for Stratos which I haven't started yet. Anyway, thanks for the info. Looking forward to the patch (I have a Radeon) which I hear should be out either the end of this week or sometime next week.
