Dot Pitch, horizontal and diagonal?

I'm looking in to buying a 21" CRT. Viewsonic quotes it's monitor specs with a Horizontal Dot Pitch and a Diagonal Dot Pitch. I've never heard of Diagonal Dot Pitch. Can anyone explain to me what the deal is between these two specs?

Here's a link:

Thanks in advance 🙂

Dot pitch is always measured diagonally unless otherwise specified. More recently manufacturers have been quoting horizontal values because they are smaller and therefore look better (and we all know that marketing departments like anything that does that).

On a shadow mask monitor, the 'dots' are arranged in a triangular grid fashion. You can measure the distance between dots either along horizontals, or along diagonals. Measuring along the diagonals gives a larger spacing.

Aperture grille screens have a 'stripe pitch' and these are measured horizontally because there is no way of measuring them diagonally.
