I do a lot of installs since I own a computer shop. Since some of the regular software I install requires at least .net 2.0 I couldn't help but notice it is gone from Windows Update and replaced with .net 3.5.
What is up with 3.5 requiring a 248 mb download? That's astrominical. I can't seem to find the redistributable on MS website, so I have to download it a lot.
Anyone know where I can get the redistributable?
Edit: I found the redistributable.
So I guess the post is a wtf is a 248 mb download?

I noticed this a few weeks back on some PC builds. Thank god we've got a fat pipe at work.

FWIW that's not even available on Technet to download. They offer .NET 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 redistributable though.

The .NET on the Windows update site says that it contains updates for 2, 3, and 3.5.

I just downloaded 3.5 standalone the other day, and it was something like 50mb. What ever size it was, it was way smaller than the update site file.

Yes, I have tried that. When I went to install cdburnerxp it told me I needed .net 2.0 or higher and linked to a MS webpage with the 52 mb intstall. However, then I went into Windows Update and you will find an "update" that is 248 mb.

I thought .net framework 3.5 would be an all-inclusive redistributable. I later discovered that even after installing it, there were a few apps (MeGUI for instance) that would tell me I needed .net framework 2.0+ to use them. Then, I came across some other audio/video utility (the name escapes me) that told me I needed .net 1.1 installed to use the program. So I grabbed their installers as well and everything was kosher.

I think it's mighty odd. How about an all-inclusive redistributable, Microsoft? And why can't I integrate it (or other things like DirectX) into a custom install disc like hotfixes/service packs?

If you are doing a lot of installs, why don't you setup a WSUS server?

Install your OS, make a reg key file to point the client to the WSUS server.

Run the wuauclt.exe /updatenow command.

Updates install.

Make a reg key file to unpoint the client to the server.
