Dos Client, does anybody use it?

I was wondering if anybody uses the dos client? How does its production compare to windows? Can you boot off a flopy and run off flopy without a hard drive? I know "Dont ask so many questions" HeHE

Stanman, not many use the DOS client... We've got Klinux now and don't need DOS anymore at all 😉

If you think Klinux might be hard to use since it's based on linux, try it and I guarantee you WILL be pleasantly surprised 😎

The only thing you need to be crackin' with Klinux is a CPU/mobo/ram combo with a floppy drive and a supported NIC (which are most any NIC usually found today😉) Preferably you would also be running a pproxy with Klinux, but if you've got an always on connection you don't _need_ it.

Stanman: I used a dos disk with the dos client 8011,it workes fine for sometime.
You don't have to use your harddrive, but when you don't use it your floppydrive will spin like every 20 seconds, so that is why i turned back to use a small harddisk with dos and a client.
A better option is klinux it is a little faster and you have easy network access.

I use the DOS client on a laptop that Klinux doesn't recognize the NIC. I have it on the hard drive and set up so it starts automatically when the laptop is booted. I have to sneakernet the work units. I haven't checked the keyrate to see if it is slow or not.

You can run it off of a floppy if you don't mind the frequent access. 🙂

If you have network or internet connection on that PC, Klinux is the way to go. Very easy to setup, even for us Windows guys. 🙂
 
osmo was selling some small 230mb Hd's for about $5 last time i checked, you may want to PM him if you go with the HD option
 
I've used the DOS client in the past with lots of luck. Just download 2 weeks worth of RC5 work units and let it chug away on a box in the corner. Added the client exe to the autoexec and away we went.

Sounds like the way I do it. I have a script that copies the buff-out.rc5 file to a floppy and restarts the client. When the in buffer gets close to running out of work, I download a large number of work units to a PC that has 'Net connection, then move that buff-in.rc5 file to a floppy, take it to the DOS PC, and import the file using:

dnetc -import a:\buff-in.rc5

(sometimes for speed I rename it buff-ina.rc5, copy it to the hard drive and do the import from there, as it is faster)

I do that as many times as needed to get a large input buffer so it can just sit there and crack away. 😀
