Dos Boot in XP w/out Floppy

I have a laptop running Win XP Home with a DVD-R and I want to update the firmware on it, but it requires booting from a floppy. I can put it in my root folder and access it in dos I suppose, but how would I boot up to dos without a floppy drive? TIA

Windows XP doesn't have a native DOS mode, so you'll need to either use a floppy, or you may get it to work with a bootable CD.

You can always get an external USB floppy - or - download and create the Ultimate Boot CD.

Its pretty easy to make a bootable cd in Nero, and may be in other burning apps too. Just add the flash utility and the new firmware to it as well. I usually carry it a step further though and use batch files to create a ram drive, copy the flash utility and firmware to the ram drive and execute the flash utility with the proper parameters and switches. This makes the flash very fast and eliminates any potential problems of accessing the optical drive while flashing it.
