DoS attacks

I am having a problem with DoS attacks. and i have researched alot, but everything seemed to be outdated. someone seems to be using a VPS with a Pearl script, and sending on attack on my ip. is there anyway to stop the DoS attack?
This is really frustrating me that i cannot figure this out. and im sure others would like to hear this as well.

If its just a single IP targetting you then you can simply block their IP at the firewall.

Is there a particular reason anyone would want to DoS you?

Blocking the IP with a Firewall should kill off the simple DoS attack.

Are you providing a service that someone would want to deny?

Are you being scanned or are you actually being DoSed? A DoS would actually cause something of yours not to work. If you are being scanned then its not that big of a deal. Just block them if its really annoying you.
