DOS attacking my own server - Testing vs slashdot effect

I want to make sure my website can withstand the slashdot effect. Is there way to test this? See how much traffic it can handle?
 
I can't really think of anything unless you run a ping loop and ping it to death on multiple computers. Though, someone in the security department should be able to correct me with a more viable option.
 
you need someone with an outside pipe bigger then yours, and some load generators. We us Radview and an in house tool to generate traffic. We have crashed some pretty beefy setups before...
