Dorsey = Overrated?

Mookow

Ken Dorsey was a Heisman Candidate this year. After the NFL combine, there are people (including scouts) talking about him not even being drafted. Do you think his shortfalls were concealed by the rest of the UM football team?

From the ESPN article

QB Ken Dorsey (Miami): Scouts kept trying to find nice things to say about him and basically they ran out of ways to keep from bashing his lack of arm strength. His throwing performance Sunday was disastrous and, that sterling college record aside, one has to wonder now if he'll even be drafted. Great kid but not even a good prospect.

He is a good quarterback, but not a great one. I am a huge Miami Hurricanes fan and hate to say it, but he will more then likely either not get drafted or get drafted late and be a 3rd string qb.

Not all good college QB have what it takes to be NFL QBs. I can put a list of QBs together since the '92 season (starting with Gino Torretta and Jay Barker in the '93 Sugar Bowl) of good college QBs on great college teams who failed to make the cut in the NFL.

You could load that list with all of the Nebraska "quarterbacks" from the past 15 years.

LOL..so true. Though it was a shame that Tommie Frazier had the blood clot problems with his legs. He was amazing in the National Championship game that year against Florida. He may not have made it as a QB in the NFL but he would have made it somewhere.

Yeah well the scouts don't have a damn clue how someone will perform in the NFL. Plenty of first round QBs have done absolutely nothing in the NFL. Look at Ryan Leaf. What a waste.

I hope he walks on somewhere and gets a chance. I think he is smart enough to be a good QB. The NFL isn't all about arm strength. NFL relies on being able to read the defense and adjusting to what happens.

If the NFL isn't all about arm strength, what happened to Danny Wuerffel. 😉

Well, if you have the first pick... who do you take??

Defensive line-
Defensive back-
QB-
RB-
WR-
ect.

Well, best DL has got to be Suggs out of ASU. Look for him to go first... or maybe Newman out of KState. Lewis is a defensive coach... and the Bengals need defensive help. Best QB is a toss up. Leftwich isn't really healthy right now, so, you'd might want to take Palmer. Best reciever hands down is Rogers. I think he is the most talented player in the draft. He would be a GREAT pick for the Lions. RB's are a bit sparce this year. Look for Johnson to be taken first. A few sleeper picks.... 1) Kenny Dorsey... He knows how to win and would make a great backup QB. 2) Lee Suggs... He make a great RB somewhere. 3) Dave Ragone.. not much of a sleeper really, he could be a year or so away from starting. 4) E.J. Henderson.. didn't have that great of a workout but he has what it takes.

OF course the NFL isnt all about arm strength but it is a part of it, especially since reading the defenses can be tought and armstrength cant. Dorsey has the opportunity to be a very good backup QB down the road but I never thought he'd be a starter in the NFL. On the flipside guys with the ability that don't have the head to play QB amaze me with how many chances they get. Such as Leaf and here's another Tony Banks. Banks was an above average college QB who threw more int's than TD's in college(and he had great recevers Mason n Muhhamed). He had the arm but could never play consistently yet he's held at least 3 starting jobs sometimes for multiple years. Simply amazing.

Ryan Leaf is a completely different story. He didn't have the work habit for the NFL and once he got paid he turned into a total a$$hat. Some guys just "can't" make it in the NFL, but some guys can't make it cause of their personality.

Dorsey will make a great coach someday. He knows the game inside and out. I just don't think he has the ability to play.

I have watched Wuerffel play quite a few times. He always looked lost out there. A lot of his problems I would say was being confused by defenses. Yes he couldn't throw the deep ball that well but every team doesn't play like that.

A lot of teams use the short pass to setup a powerful running attack. I think brains can make up for a lack of arm strength. Do you have to be an accurate passer? Heck yeah. I personally don't know how Dorsey will do just because he hasn't look all that accurate without his quality receivers at Miami.

Here are some examples of first round drafts that haven't done anything:

1989:
2 Dallas Walsh, Steve QB Miami
13 Phoenix Rosenbach, Timm QB Washington State

1992:
6 Cincinnati Klingler, David QB Houston
16 N.Y. Giants Brown, Dave QB Duke

1993:
2 Seattle Mirer, Rick QB Notre Dame

1997:
26 San Francisco Druckenmiller, Jim QB Virginia Tech

I think 1998 and after is WAY to early to see if the player will make an impact.

The list can go ON AND ON AND ON. My point is that scouts don't have the answers. There are WAY too many factors in the NFL QB position. Someone that wasn't the best in college can be awesome in the NFL because the person is smart and is able to overcome his short comings in his talent.

All a scout can judge is physical ability. College football is too different than the NFL so it is difficult to judge other abilities.
