Did you worry about anyone stealing your computer?

I have a Shuttle SFF and a Dell 2005FPW and I'm wondering if I should do anything about securing it, or should I just get it insured?

Laptop, maybe. Desktop, doubtful. Keep your room locked whenever you're not there and problems will be greatly reduced.

I'd worry if there are minorites around, and yes I am a minority (albeit indian, and we dont steal much.)

Asian and white people tended to be the people caught stealing in my dorms... that could mean one of two things...

Keep away machine away from windows so they can't easily break in. Make policy with roommate to keep door closed when not there.

Get some cable locks to discourage casual thieves. Dorms are usually decently secured, but a little security never hurts. Definately insure it.

I used to lock my laptop with a cable to my bed, but I got lazy within 2 months. Never again.

In December someone climbed into the 2nd floor, broke 2 windows and stole 4 laptops. Yet I didn't care...

Hah. When you're in the library, don't leave your stuff. I know people who trust ME to watch their stuff (strangers). They just tap me and ask me to watch their stuff as they go on crap/piss runs. I'm like dude wtf you just let a 1.5k laptop there.. Are you assuming I don't want 2 laptops or something (mine + theirs)?....

I mean if someone wants to break into your room, you're screwed either way, so don't worry about it.

No. My halls had swipe cards in to the building and we had cameras on the outside of the building. Guards patrol around. I'd always lock my door if I left the room for even to walk down to someone elses room.

I was more worried about someone taking my projector than my desktop, but even then I didn't worry about it. Never heard of anything being stolen in my dorm except as a joke and then given back.

I locked my door without fail first two years, then didn't care anymore after that and I didn't get burned.
