ok, let me get down to it, I have to build a dorm computer (compact is a must), and here is what I have spec'd out...
I dont think it needs to be more than this but can I cut cost anywhere or get better parts for cheeper or same price?

The game my sister-in-law plays is FF XI, so the minimum specs are kind of low, P3 800, 128 min ram, radeon or geforce, dx sound card blah blah...

Soltek QBiC EQ3704BW
Athlon XP 2600+ (Barton)
2x256MB PC3200 (Buffalo)
Western Digital WD800JD SATA 80GB
GeForce FX5600XT
Rosewill 52x32x52x16 CD-RW/DVD-Rom
Logitech Cordless Desktop
Floppy

So, total price is about 620 sans shipping
I think it will work good, but her FFXI game says nothing about an AMD an minimum so I never built an AMD before so dont really know the equivilant. XP2600+ is around a 2.4 Celeron correct?

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

the PR ratings by 2600+ are literally supposed to be compared to the amd thunderbird line of the particular clockspeed (2600 in this case). Right now they're more commonly compared to Intel P4's, not celeron's.

well thats good to know. So even though the game's box doesnt say amd as minimum, it wont effect anything correct?

correct me if i am wrong, but arent SATAs still slightly more expensive compared to the IDE counterpart with virutally no real world benefits other than the cable neatness?

from my usage of ide and sata I've always found sata to be faster, most noticable is when I install windows xp).

Also, considering this person is going to college and will be doing dling a lot of movies, etc...

AND AHHHHHHHH
please don't compare the athlon xp 2600+ to anything celeron. Even the new D's... I think I saw that athlons are faster, and still cheaper.

P.S. might want to up the hard drive in there (my experience with everyone I know going to college).

only reason I said celeron is the cache levels...

anyway, these samgung P Series drives max the sata bus (140mb burst)
yea they are faster

she is a tomboy girl, and not very computer literate, so the size i dont think is an issue (ie no pron)

I just want to make sure the 2600 barton is good enough for her MMOG game she plays. maybe a dvd here and there too
